President Obama is visiting Berlin for the first time this week (that’s German Chancellor Angela Merkel up there on the right)–which means Michelle Obama will be wearing a bunch of nice dresses and we get to care about them. Last night, for example, the President and First lady attended a fancy dinner at Charlottenburg Palace and MObama went for an unusual but characteristically ladylike look.

The First Lady opted for a Pre-Fall 2013 Carolina Herrera dress; a jacquard wave print piece with a square neckline, a serious drop waist and architectural pleating. The straps, you’ll notice, are accented with bows. The First Lady finished off the look with sensible black befitting-a-First-Lady kitten heels and gently waved, side-parted hair.

We are really into the color (and square necklines in general), though perhaps the flounce is a little exaggerated? RCFA, for one, posits Michelle would have been better suited to the sheath version. What say you?

Here’s another look:

Obama is visiting Berlin for the first time during his presidency and his speech at the Brandenburg Gate is to be the highlight. Obama will be speaking close to the 50th anniversary of the historic speech by then U.S. President John F. Kennedy in Berlin in 1963, during which he proclaimed the famous sentence: "Ich bin ein Berliner." (Photo by Sean Gallup/Getty Images)

I probably would have chosen the sheath version, but she looks great!

Also, as always when I see a picture of the Obamas next to other people…damn, they’re so TALL!

I like the flounce. It’s fresh and new and she looks great.
