Angelina Jolie Gave A Moving Speech To The U.N. Security Council

Angelina Jolie has really just become a heroine, right? She’s gone from someone who we vaguely knew from having pouty lips and sleeping with Brad Pitt to just being the best person ever. And if you don’t think that already, you will once you hear the moving speech she just gave to the U.N. Security Council.

Jolie is a special envoy for the U.N. Refugee Agency. She discussed the issues of sexual assault in countries she’s visited, and, according to Reuters, said:

“These crimes happen not because they are inherent to war, but because the global climate allows it. Young girls raped and impregnated before their bodies are able to carry a child, causing fistula. Boys held at gunpoint and forced to sexually assault their mothers and sisters. Women raped with bottles, wood branches and knives to cause as much damage as possible. Toddlers and even babies dragged from their homes, and violated. They suffer the most at the hands of their rapists, but they are also victims of this culture of impunity. That is the sad, upsetting and indeed shameful reality.”

If that sounds incredibly depressing – it is, it’s terrible, and as Jolie says, shameful – it may be reassuring to know that immediately after Jolie spoke the 15-member Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing that rape can exacerbate conflicts.

So, basically, people are being forces for good in the world, and it’s going to be really hard to watch Gia in the same whimsical, cheesy-movie light, but I’m okay with that.

I am always sickened by the argument you’ll sometimes see people (in my experience, always men – anecdotal of course) that since a girl is capable of being pregnant, that it means she’s fully able to carry a child without any problems. It’s just not true.

Angelina Jolie has been doing humanitarian work since 2001 so she really hasn’t just become a heroine. She’s been one for over a decade now. She’s pretty awesome.
