Rihanna Attacks Liz Jones On Instagram

It amazes me how many different platforms celebrities can use to to get into fights with people. Just look at how Rihanna attacked Liz Jones on Instagram.

Look, to be fair, Liz Jones said dumb stuff about Rihanna first. She wrote an article in The Daily Mail claiming that:

I don’t care if she has the voice of an angel and is self-made, feisty and confident.

All these qualities pale to nothing when we know she went back to her abusive boyfriend, Chris Brown, who pleaded guilty to assaulting her in 2009; that she promotes drug-taking, drinking and the sort of fashion sense on stage that surely invites rape at worst, disrespect at least.

Nothing you wear invites rape. You can be walking through the streets naked as a jaybird, and it does not give people an excuse to rape you. I will continue saying that until I am blue in the face.

Speaking of which, Liz Jones ran a picture of Rihanna after she was beaten, which was INCREDIBLY INAPPROPRIATE. That was not something that Rihanna did that was bad. That was something terrible that happened to her.

Rihanna responded on Instagram, claiming that:

LOL!!!! My money got a bad habit of pissing people off!! If you sincerely wanna help little girls more than their own parents do, here’s a toxic tip: don’t be amateur with your articles, you sound bitter! What’s all this about hair and nails and costumes and tattoos?? ….That shit ain’t clever!!! That shit ain’t journalism! That’s a sad sloppy menopausal mess!!! Nobody over here acts like they’re perfect! I don’t pretend that I’m like you, i just live… My life!! And I don’t know why y’all still act so surprised by any of it!! “Role Model” is not a position or title that I have ever campaigned for, so chill wit dat! I got my own fucked up shit to work on, I’ll never portray that as perfect, but for right now it’s ME!! Call it what ya want!! Toxic was cute, Poisonous Pop Princess had a nice ring to it, just a lil wordy! And P.S. my first American Vogue cover was in 2011…APRIL!!! #ElizabethAnnJones

You know, I don’t agree with all of Rihanna’s choices, but in this instance I’m going to say that story checks out.

I don’t like aspects of Looney Liz’s article (um, because she’s crazy and she always makes sure to put her crazy pants on before she articulates an opinion) but I think she’s right. Rihanna is the worst. The problem is that there’s nothing to be done; the girl isn’t putting herself out there as a Miss America style role model and she can do whatever she bloody well likes. Are guns and drugs and stripper clothes tacky? Um, yeah and it is her right to be as tacky as she wishes. If you don’t like it, close your eyes and think of Agent Dana Scully. Now THERE is a classy lady.

You forgot the best part of that article, where she refers to that picture of RiRi with two joints as “phallic.”

I’m one hundred percent behind Rhianna here. If Rhianna was any other young woman, no one would be okay with someone writing a slut shaming article like that about her, especially since it’s well know that she’s been the victim of domestic violence, and people were not very supportive. Fact is, people think they own young women, and that goes double for young women who are somewhat provocative and make mediocre pop music. Since she wrote some annoying song that they overplayed on the radio, and she wore booty shorts, she’s no longer a human. She no longer deserves empathy for the horrible experiences she’s had, she deserves to be told that she’s “inviting rape” and she’s a bad person for going back to Chris Brown when she’s admitted to having problems with relationships. And she deserves to be infantilized. For those who are going on about how she’s a bad role model for young girls….she’s 25. Not 15. While her antics may be provocative, they’re not particularly age inappropriate. But people don’t see “this is a 25 year old who dresses herself and also clearly has personal issues that she needs to work out,” they see “OMG that girl my 15 year old daughter listens to isn’t throwing her own life and preferences aside to give my unsupervised child the lessons I should be giving her as a parent!” Honestly, most teenage girls aren’t seriously saying “I want to be Rihanna when I grow up,” they just like her music and the clothes she wears. A teenage girls who mimics Rihanna was already on the road to those things before they listened to her music or read her tweets. Any parent who thinks their teenage girl who is seriously influenced by what any pop singer is doing needs realize, when you point a finger, four more are pointing back at you. Teenagers wore scandalous clothes, smoked pot, tried alcohol, thought violence was kewl, and wore ugly jewelry long before Rihanna, Britney Spears, or Madonna came on the scene. Parents are in charge of what their kids do, and if they don’t bother to raise their daughters to aspire to something other than being pretty and vaguely “successful,” they can’t be surprised when they latch on to someone pretty and successful. She mentions girls as young as 8. Rihanna’s old music might have been rated PG, but nowadays she very much targets a teen/young adult audience. If you’re letting your 8 year old listen to songs about S&M, strippers, and partying, you’re the problem, not the grown woman living her own life. Her fourth album was called “Rated R” for Christ’s sake, obviously not for 8 year olds!

Also, is it just me, or are some of the criticisms in that article beyond stupid? She’s drinking beer and she (GASP!) isn’t using a cup! Her jewelry is gaudy and unfeminine! She has an….IV drip? What? And Britney Spears has been “ravaged” by fame? She had her crazy phase, but nowadays she’s beautiful, seems like a good mom, and looks pretty content.
