Makeup Inspired By: Porno By Irvine Welsh

Irvine Welsh Book Cover Makeup Tutorial

I have been having so much fun doing my weekly Makeup Inspired By series, but sometimes it isn’t the easiest thing to come up with ideas that I think people will find interesting or enjoyable. For this week, I thought I was going to do something simple, like “Makeup Inspired By: flowers & shit,” but I was afraid that would be boring. As I was rummaging through my room, cleaning/frantically searching for my camera cord, I found my old copy of Porno by Irvine Welsh (author of Trainspotting) and instantly realized that its book jacket had to be my next tutorial.

The book itself is incredible, but before I even read it, I remember having it handed to me by an actress on set and instantly falling in love with the cover art. It has all the makings of a memorable book cover: excellent colors, great font choices, curiosity-inciting-yet-bizarrely-disturbing beauty. As I read Porno, I recall that each time I put it down, I would find myself staring at the cover for a moment. I love it, and I hope you love it, too (and I strongly recommend you pick up a copy if you are so inclined).

Step 1: Wash your face with a hydrating face wash like Amala Hydrating Cream Cleanser, then massage skin with a light oil like SW Basics Makeup Remover (it doubles as a moisturizer!). You can even skip this step if you want a “waxier” look (sounds gross, but it’s appropriate for this look), but I prefer to start out clean just so long as there’s a lot of moisture.

Step 2: Apply a product like Tarte Clean Slate Primer sparingly on your nose, chin and forehead. Apply all over cream foundation, like CoverGirl Clean Whipped Creme, then add concealer under the eyes. I used Clinique Line Smoothing Concealer on my dark circles and blemishes. Finish with a big fluffy powder brush and Make Up For Ever HD Finishing Powder.

Step 3: Using your fingers to warm a dab of cream blush up, apply rounded circles of bright pink rouge on your cheeks. Don’t use anything with sparkle in it. I stuck to Besame Cream Blush with a touch of Smashbox‘s in Posy Pink overtop. It will look ridiculous and unrealistic. This is okay.

Step 4: Using a medium-sized fluffy eyeshadow brush, brush a hot pink shadow across your lids like Urban Decay‘s in Woodstock. Then, apply a lighter pink shadow in the crease such as the pink from L’Oreal‘s Blue Haute Couture palette and blend it a bit with the brighter color. Use a little bit of highlighter like Benefit High-Beam underneath the brow to make brows “pop.”

Right now, your face should look approximately like this.

But with less morning sass, maybe.

Step 5: Instead of my normal brow shaping using an angled brush, I used this one:

Then, I took a dark brown matte powder shadow from Smashbox (Sumatra) and applied it on the top portion of my brows to reshape without using any particularly difficult products or techniques. Just simple shading on top, then sloping downward like the cover’s face. I also added a little light brown shadow (Bliss) from the same brand on the bottom portion of  my brows to make the top portion stand out more.

Step 6: Apply a liquid liner on top and bottom lids in a medium-thin line; for this, I picked Kat Von D Tattoo Liner.

Step 7: Despite my deep disdain for false eyelashes, I placed ELF Dramatic Lashes on my lids. Sadly, I couldn’t find the glue I usually use, but theirs worked decently enough.

I used Wet N Wild Mega Impact Mascara in Very Black to sort of blend the fake lashes and my real ones together. I added a few strokes of black liquid liner on the bottom to simulate the effect of the book’s eyelashes. Also (and this is shown in the top photo, I accidentally reversed their order), I applied an extra coat of black mascara on the bottom and kind of swished my fingers over them to get them slightly clumped.

Step 8: Lipstick! And oh, what a lipstick. It’s Tarte Glamazon in Fierce — a bright, bright, bright red that almost comes off as vinylesque when unblotted. I applied it in a rounded shape.

And voila! You are done.

But if you really wanna be authentic…

(Except do not really wear plastic around your face. It will suffocate you. Seriously. This was cut in half.)

And, thanks to Anna Faber-Hammond, a wonderful human being whose website you can find here, I now have this!

When you do these tutorials, do you keep the makeup on all day? If so, badass.

    • Samantha_Escobar

Wellllll I do them at home, then go to work, so I generally don’t wear them unless it is a super normal look or just a foundation tutorial or something. :( I know, I am not brave!

Thank you so much! I’m so excited when people dig ‘em. :)

Wow, do you have both sides of your nose pierced? I’ve never seen anyone pull that off before!

(Also, as said, you are very pretty.) I’m always amazed by the number of smart, gorgeous, talented ladies who write for the gloss. Seriously, there’s not a single one of you who isn’t amazing.

I do! Fun fact: I have had my nose pierced 11 times. Thrice on the left nostril, four times on the right, both high nostrils once, and two septum piercings. Or maybe it’s twice on the left, thrice on the right…anyway, yeah. I love nostril piercings and I’m glad you think it works! :)

Also, thanks so much. I am humbled every day by all the cool people I work with.
