We really don’t like jewelry. It’s probably a weird peeve when one works in fashion and beauty–but we just can’t get past it. Don’t like the way it looks, don’t like the way it feels on, etc. Are we alone on this one?
Anyway, covering jewelry-related matters is part of the job so we see a lot of it and it’s very rare that we feel anything other than indifferent. But the new collaboration from socialite favorite Swarovski and the high priests of fashion at Maison Martin Margiela… looks pretty cool! Based on the initial press imagery, anyway.
Since every collection needs some sort of tantalizing press angle, the big selling point here is the use ofÂ Crystalactite, a material that fuses crystal and matte white resin. From there, theyÂ form “a single smooth block, which is then cut into stalactite shapes.” According to WWD, the resulting pieces “combine the clarity of crystal with Margielaâ€™s raw industrial aesthetic.”
As for the pieces themselves (and the price point):
The Maison Martin Margiela couture show in Paris on July 3Â featured pieces from the higher-end collection, due to go on sale in November. They will be priced at around 1,000 euros, or $1,285 at current exchange, for a bracelet and around 800 euros, or $1,025, for a pendant, saidÂ Nadja Swarovski, member of the Swarovski executive board.
A three-piece Maison Martin Margiela for Atelier Swarovski line will be available for around half the price, she added, noting it was the first time that Atelier Swarovski was launching a co-branded product with aÂ fashionÂ label, after collaborations withÂ designersÂ includingÂ Christopher KaneÂ andÂ Marios Schwab.
It’s cool to see Margiela doing peculiar and striking oneoffs like this–ever since the wildly popular H&M collection, the brand has really established itself as a power collaborator. Interested to see what these look like in person.
