When I was really young, I remember hearing Jiminy Cricket (or, rather, Cliff Edwards as Jiminy Cricket) sing “When You Wish About A Star” and becoming emotional almost instantaneously. Granted, this could be because I have been a moody, exaggerative human since dramatically refusing to let anybody besides my mother feed me as a toddler, but I think that it also just touched me deeply because it felt like hope in a song (that sounded dumber when I read it aloud, I am aware it is a silly statement).
Regardless of how you feel about Disney itself, it’s kind of impossible to deny that it has made so many children so very, very happy. I took my nephew to Disney earlier this year and watching his face light up whenever something “magic” happened was…well, I’m getting teary just thinking about it, so that should tell you something about how lovely it was. And when we were watching the fireworks, “When You Wish About A Star” began playing toward the end. Once again, I became really, really emotional. I held my nephew’s hand while we watched this:
And he was all:
I MEAN REALLY. Me, him, his mother (not pictured) and my brother were very happy campers after.
So now, I have an even larger attachment to this song and, given that Disneyland’s 58th anniversary is coming up next week, I thought now was as good a time as any to do some seriously sparkly stuff with my makeup for fun. Plus, my nephew loves bright colors and textures, so this is also kinda in dedication to him. This isn’t a look you’ll want to wear to work, or even out on a Friday night (unless you really like going to raves in 2003, I guess), but it is a fun one for a special occasion that requires a lot of shimmer.
Step 0: Wash your face well, pat dry and use a lightweight moisturizer. Do not use a face oil; it will likely get weird and clumpy with any sparkly stuff you apply.
Step 1: Using your fingers, apply a primer to your nose, chin and forehead; for this, I picked Smashbox Photo Finish. Apply foundation, concealer and powder as you normally would. For foundation, I picked CoverGirl Clean Whipped Creme; for concealer, Smashbox High Definition Concealer; for powder, Make Up For Ever HD Powder.
Step 2: Use a shimmery primer to get cheeks really glowing, like Smashbox Photo Finish Luminizing Primer. Then, smooth on a sandy pink cream blush, like Flower Win Some, Rouge Some. Atop the blush, dust on a luminizing powder like Smashbox Soft Lights in Prism.
Step 3: Apply a bit of eyeshadow primer on lids, like Benefit Stay Don’t Stray. This will keep the makeup from…well, straying. Using a medium-sized fluffy eyeshadow brush, apply a very pale pink eyeshadow with a hint of shimmer, like Smashbox‘s Parfait. On the inner half of the lid, apply a medium blue eyeshadow like Urban Decay in Peace. Blend a deeper blue — like CoverGirl in Sapphire Blue – across lid toward the edge, then a deep purple (I used Smashbox in Aubergine) from halfway across lid to outside, as well as in the crease. Blend upward with a large fluffy shadow brush. Apply a dot of yellow at the very inner corners, like Sephora‘s in Banana Split, and then a little bit of the purple on the bottom lashline.
Step 4: Apply a thick line of gold liquid liner and add a large wing outside of eyes. I am a huge fan of Urban Decay‘s 24/7 liners already, but this one in El Dorado is just absurdly awesome. Then, I applied a very, very thin line with a similar, but smaller wing, of UD’s 24/7 in Perversion to just widen the eye area (I’m not a fan of how lighter liners look plain). Add a layer of lash primer, like Lancome‘s, and two coats of black mascara (I picked Wet N Wild‘s Mega Impact).
Optional: Add a little star at the end of one gold wing!
Step 5: Fill in brows with something like Clinique Brow Powder and an angled brush, then style with brow gel to keep them secure.
Step 6: Use a little bit of sparkle right above the lip — such as  the Soft Lights from earlier — on the cupid’s bow to enhance lip shape. Then, apply a sheer pink balm like Fresh Sugar Rose Lip Treatment.
Now, put on some pretty earrings and sparkle like you’re an effing firework.
