Glee star Cory Monteith has died at age 31. His body was found in a Vancouver hotel room on Saturday, according to local police.

“When he missed his check-out time, staff went to the room at noon and found his body,” per a statement on the department’s website, adding that “all indications are that there was no foul play.” He is believed to have been alone when he died.

Monteith had recently completed a stint in rehab for substance abuse, which had caused to miss the final two episodes of Glee. There is an autopsy scheduled for Monday.

Rep’s for Monteith’s girlfriend and Glee costar Lea Michele have released the following statement:

“We ask that everyone kindly respect Lea’s privacy during this devastating time.”

This is just awful. Though it was known he had struggles with drugs, it was shocking because it was not externally presented like Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen or Amy Winehouse. When I read the words “struggling/troubled actor Cory Montieth” its a bit of a shock because he looked all put together, wholesome, in a way. As an early fan of Glee (met Cory once) I had known he started drugs before his teens. He was obviously struggling and for a very long time and privately. Just awful.

After the mourning though, comes the business questions. What happens with Glee? Will Lea stay (god, I feel awful for her, she said she can’t remember a time she wasn’t with him)? Will they replace him or them? I mean, him and Lea pretty much made the show. They’re the couple you root for. What happens now?

I don’t watch Glee, so I don’t really know much about him, but this is still completely horrible and took me by total surprise when I read about it late last night. I’d heard about his issues with drugs, but I’d thought he was doing better.

(I’m just going to register one lighter note of surprise though – he was 31 and playing a teenager?? That’s even more of a stretch than Stockard Channing as Rizzo.)
