A 61-year-old veteran of the Navy named Michael Boatwright has woken up believing he is a man from Sweden named Johan Ek, speaking only Swedish and in complete disbelief that he is indeed who he really is. Because I have seen too many movies, this story got me thinking about what it would be like to wake up with the skills and personality of another human being, and which identities would be kind of totally awesome.
By no means am I trying to trivialize Boatwright’s experience; obviously, it is an incredibly frustrating situation for him and I deeply hope he is able to recall what is presently lost to him. According to Wikipedia (I know, the most reliable source of medical info!) citing the DSM, fugue states “may have a duration from hours to months and recovery is usually rapid.” That latter part is why I feel comfortable writing this, but I figured I would explain that, yes, I still do take this matter very seriously.
Anyway, here are the people I would like to wake up believing I am. It would be like X-Men, except instead of powers, I would absorb their confidence levels, weird self ideals and some skills.
