Period art, while fascinating, is generally not something I get down with being on or around me all the time — that is, unless it’s a pair of amazing tampon earrings meant to show support for the women of Texas who are having the rights ripped from their uteruses piece by piece, step by step.
Yesterday, on Melissa Harris-Perry‘s MSNBC morning show, the host herself proudly displayed sincere support for Texas women — especially those fighting for them — by donning tampon earrings. Why? Because the Texas legislature had temporarily banned feminine hygiene products in the Capital building due to their irrational fear that female protesters would spontaneously begin tossing menstrual pads at politicians who try to put absurd regulations on their bodies and virtually remove all control the women possess over their own reproductive systems.
While putting the earrings on, Harris-Perry said:
“My producer Lorena made for me last week some tampon earrings. The Texas state legislature said that you couldn’t bring tampons in, when these women were going to, in fact, stand up for their own reproductive rights.”
Pro-tip: While many people wish to hit Rick Perry with numerous objects, none of those objects are so soft and pleasant as a Kotex with wings. (It would probably just politely glide into his lap anyway.) In all seriousness, though, I think Harris-Perry’s choice to outwardly display her support for the fight against oppression while simultaneously not being afraid of the bizarre, inexplicable, ridiculous stigma regarding menstruation is awesome. Four for you, Melissa Harris-Perry! (And none for Gretchen Wieners.)
