Heatherette co-founder and renowned club kid Richie Rich is back in the news, but not in a good way. He was summoned to court in Manhattan this week after being arrested at the Westin Times Square for skipping out on a massive hotel bill and charged with theft by “failure to pay based on stealth.”
While that’s a pretty fun way of describing running out on an $1,800 hotel bill for room fees and “ordered services,” it’s not exactly a great sign for those of us holding out hope that Rich would be hosting huge crazy fashion week parties again sometime soon.
Heatherette launched in 1999 and its wild, over the top clothes by Rich and partner Traver Rains were popular with early-aughts celebrities including Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton. For all its TV appearances and celebrity love, the line was arguably most famous for its completely crazy runway shows featuring an array of celebrity stunt models like Anna Nicole Smith, Amanda Lepore, and Kimora Lee Simmons. (Rich’s 2010 solo show was closed awesomely by Ellen DeGeneres in a silver suit, high-tops, and a miniature houndstooth hat.)
Like many smaller fashion brands, Heatherette dissolved in 2008 and Rich went solo for a few years. But Rich had announced back in February that he was working on a lingerie collection and that he and Rains would be staging a Heatherette comeback this year, theoretically to bow sometime this summer. The clock is ticking on that particular deadline, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed that Rich and Rains and their crowd of flashy celebrity friends are back to the business of shocking people at fashion week again soon.
