Believe it or not, an amusing thing happened on the internet over the weekend. This amusing thing occurred when a woman made a joke about a male internet friend’s choice of Twitter profile pic, and the man freaked out, sincerely called her a “horrid monster” and blocked her from his life forever. Oh boy!
It all started when Hilary Sargent (a.k.a. ChartGirl) saw that Politico‘s financial reporter Ben White had changed his avatar to be less cute than before, and she told him she was feeling “meh” about the pic (not his face, mind you). This triggered an epic firestorm the likes of which she was not expecting:
But he was not kidding!
While it might be kind of rude to offer unsolicited profile pic advice, I think we can all agree that “meh on your entire existence” and “have a nice life” are fairly extreme reactions, especially considering it was supposed to be a joke. The joke works, of course, because middle-aged male financial reporters do not generally get objectified; society considers it ridiculous to do so. Sargent had already nominated him to that silly list, and here she was carrying the joke a bit further.
I’d say I feel bad for Mr. White, but he clearly let his temper get the better of him here, creating a meme-worthy exchange a man like himself should be internet-savvy enough to avoid. I’m guessing he’s feeling sheepish by now, but if he still thinks that comment makes Sargent a “horrid monster,” I invite him to switch bodies with me and spend one day as a woman who writes on the internet.
