It looks like MIA knows how to hit her label, Interscope, where it hurts. Interscope dragged their feet on setting a release date for MIA’s upcoming album Matangi, in fact, Matangi was supposed to be released back in 2012, but was pushed because the label found the album to be “too positive” for the image of MIA they like to market. According to MIA, executives at Interscope told her something to the effect of “We just built you up as the public enemy No. 1 and now you’re coming out with all this positive stuff.” Okay.
MIA was far from content to wait, so she went ahead and threatened to leak Matangi next week if Interscope didn’t set a date.
This is actually fairly mild-mannered for MIA. I would have expected her to schedule an hour long TV special in which she’d play her new LP while trashing the Interscope offices and saying purposefully incendiary comments because she’s PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE.
Well, it worked. Hours later, Interscope announced that Matangi would be released November 5th. So all it took was a tweet or two? I fully intend to threaten to leak my LP of Destiny’s Child covers unless Interscope also releases my album this year. Your move, Interscope.
