21 Extremely Ugly Cutout Dresses

worst red carpet cutout dresses

Earlier this week, Lily Collins stopped by the premiere of her new movie, The Mortal Instruments, wearing yet another cutout dress. Having covered so many examples of the remarkably banal trend, we finally just got sick of it all and declared them dumb. Or at least, frequently in very poor taste–they’re extremely popular with unapologetic fameballs for a reason.

Thus, we were inspired to wrangle up a collection of our least favorites, from recent disasters to some classic all-time worsts. Enjoy?

Lindsay Lohan Liz & Dick premiere

Lindsay Lohan promoted Liz & Dick in a spectacularly awful satin dress with breast jewels, though the problems don’t end there.

Kelly Rowland wore much fashion tape that day!

Katy Perry Grammys

Call it what you will–cutout, “boob window,” “breast pane.” Katy Perry looks like Morticia Adams at a key party.

Designers, go home you’re drunk. Stahp with the cutouts!

      Ew.

Side cutouts are particularly baffling. They don’t do what these people think they’re doing. Flesh panels do not a Stella McCartney illusion dress make.

I always think there’s something about cut-out dresses that’s just…over-egging the pudding, I guess? It feels like celebrity ladies are engaged in a frenetic race to prove who’s the most in shape, and cut-out dresses leave nowhere to hide so they get wheeled out as heavy artillery in the perpetual death-match of “who’s the Hottest Hottie Evar.”

        Nailed it.

Good god, Adrienne Bailon. Fucking HELL, that dress literally does not even look like clothes.

I can’t hate the Halle Berry one, even though it’s pretty ugly, just because Halle Berry’s midriff is the only midriff I’ve ever actually called “beautiful.”

    • Mehiella Satchi

Katy Perry looked hot and so did Halle Berry.

Yeah I found Halle Berry objectively good looking. That was the first cutout dress I’ve ever liked. And while Katy Perry’s dress was godawful, she was still gorgeous looking. If anyone can pull off the murder goth look, it’s her.
