Awesome Scientists Invented A Hangover-Free Beer

Oh Science, we forgive you for finding out that all of the things we love will make us old, because today you have given us the gift of a hangover-free beer, and we will be eternally grateful.

For those of us who are not like Alexa Chung and do not get more creative under the influence of a crippling hangover, a hangover-fighting beer has long been the dream. And a group of researchers in Australia have been hard at work making that dream a reality, which they finally achieved by fusing beer with sports drink technology.

The scientists added electrolytes to beer, and as a result the beers now help hydrate instead of dehydrate. Dehydration is one of the major causes of a hangover, and apparently a few extra electrolytes during the drinking process help keep the headaches at bay.

The scientists took four beers, two regular, one strong, one light, and added the extra electrolytes. Taste-tests confirmed that the addition did not affect the flavor of the beer.

“Of the four different beers the subjects consumed, our augmented light beer was by far the most well retained by the body, meaning it was the most effective at rehydrating the subjects,” said associate professor and lead researcher Ben Desbrow.

If hangovers didn’t exist, we would expect to see a lot more weekday-drinking going on in the world. But beer has a limited appeal. We wonder if this technology could be used to assist other spirits to kill off the hangover completely.

We hope they start with a hangover-free Champagne, because Champagne hangovers are just the worst.
