You know how every few months, we all hear about another creepy plastic surgery trend? Now, sometimes those crazy things wind up being just plain Photoshop, but other times, they are a bunch of people actually copying celebrities, getting quickie nose jobs and obsessing over the Duchess of Cambridge‘s face; basically, weird stuff. But the trend that’s been making the rounds after a photo was posted on Reddit? It is every shade in the creep crayon box, baby.
The trend: upturned lip corners. But not in a “this is adorable, let’s all smile!” way. No, it’s in a “we’re going to remove your f’ing skin so your lip corners are in a permanent f’ing smile because sleep is for losers” way. That’s right. They remove the skin. So they can fold up the other skin. Agh. The results?
While the authenticity of the photo above has not yet been confirmed, according to a video by AONE, the clinic in South Korea reportedly responsible for these operations, this is indeed a real procedure that allows patients to have the appearance of a constant grin. They call it a “smile lipt” — an awkward combo of “lift” plus “lips” — and something about it positively terrifies me.
I should note that I am terrified of masks, even more so than ever in the past few years (thanks Poughkeepsie Tapes!), which leads me to believe the reason I find this trend so frightening is because it reminds me of several masks I’ve seen. And it reminds me of the Black Dahlia, which is equally frightening, albeit for totally different reasons (see the Shelved Dolls piece on her for more).
So, while I may be in support of nearly any (safe) procedure people want to do to their own bodies, should you be a patient of this procedure who stops me on the street, I will assume you are actually here to drain my blood and bathe in it, then I will run screaming. No offense.
