It’s a little bit nuts how much Miley Cyrus‘ faux-raunchy performance over the weekend at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards still has the cultural conversation in a vice grip: was it awesome? Was it desperate? Was it racist? Was it indicative of the end times?
We’d say it wasn’t really any of those–merely “deeply boring”–but we’re not particularly shocked by pop stars behaving like pop stars and we’re definitely not excited by people wagging their tongues around. It was gross and offputting when Gene Simmons did it.
Still, the main thrust (HA!) of Cyrus’ performance seemed to be announcing she’s not just a Disney star anymore; a perception that Selena Gomez has also been working tirelessly to dispell–most notably by moaning her way through Rihanna castoffs and taking bong rips with James Franco in Spring Breakers (then disappearing inexplicably after the first act).
Of course, they can’t all be Harmony Korine films, and Gomez has a new movie to promote–Getaway, co-starring Ethan Hawke, in which Gomez is woefully miscast as a tough, streetsmart hacker.
Oh! And the LA premiere was last night. Here is what she wore:
She’s also covered in the back:
The mini is Fall 2013 Vera Wang, the also-sheer (but cap-toed) pumps are Jimmy Choo and the giant jewels are Lorraine Schwartz. Ho hum.
