When I was a child, my mother insisted up and down that getting regular haircuts would make my hair grow faster. (I wanted long pretty princess hair.) Even as a kid I knew that wasn’t true. But cutting regularly does help get rid of split ends, which can cause hair to break off and look dry and frizzy. But a New York stylist is claiming he has the perfect cure to get rid of split ends forever.
Arsen Gurgov of the super fancy Louis Licari Salon in New York has been cutting hair with a special pair of electric scissors that heat up to 310 degrees, which he says seals the ends of the hair to “trap moisture inside” and prevent them from splitting.
“With conventional scissors, the cuticle is still open,” he told the NY Daily News. “So a few months later, you still get those split ends. With these, the heat seals the ends, so ultimately you get no split ends.”
Theoretically, that lets people grow their hair out longer and go more time between haircuts. It probably won’t save anybody any money, though, because the hot scissor haircuts at Louis Licari are more than twice the price of the same haircut with regular scissors. A regular cut at the salon is $145. The hot scissors haircut costs $350.
The thing I can’t quite figure out is why the hot-scissors haircut is so much more expensive than a regular one. A little bit of an up-sell I could see, but if the cut is from the same stylist and the only difference is that he or she uses a different pair of scissors, what accounts for the $200 difference?
This is probably one of those, “because they can” situations, isn’t it?
