We supposed it started with the Met Gala. Then that L’Officiel cover with Kane West where the couple appeared to be having sex. Now, Kim Kardashian‘s weird, inexplicably effective circling of high fashion’s periphery has brought her to the cover of CR Fashion Book, the fancy collectable high fashion bible from Carine Roitfeld. If this isn’t a sign of
the fashion industry’s shameful lack of originality Kim’s unexpected versatility, nothing is.
Continuing with an extremely unusual trend, Kardashian wears a gold grill on the cover. Inside, she poses with her pregnant belly in an editorial titled “Miss USA.” It’s cultural commentary!
The shoot was lensed by Karl Lagerfeld–which explains why the man who hates everything in the world suddenly went soft and didn’t take a recent opportunity to hate on Kim Kardashian (who is a lot more offensive than, uh, all Greek people). It was art-directed by Riccardo Tisci. Givenchy‘s Tisci, of course, is close pals with Kanye West and designed Kim’s Met Gala dress. Kanye is also pals with Roitfeld.
Basically, if Kanye can persuade a whole bunch of powerful fashion people that his impressively horrible clothes are anything other than impressively horrible, he can also slowly convince them to embrace his useless significant other. Kardashian, of course, is always game for press.
The shoot took place in Karl Lagerfeld‘s Paris photography studio. The whole issue is apparently hope-themed (with explains the shoot with a topless Karlie Kloss in Montauk?). According to WWD, Roitfeld would like you to believe the images reflect a “precious moment of Kim’s pregnancy that people haven’t seen,” adding that, “Pregnancy is something that I always love. It’s about hope and the future and a new baby.”
She’d also like to distinguish between this aspect of Kardashian’s fame and all the others:
“This is not something for a gossip magazine that goes into the trash. This is a magazine that is a collector’s item.”
And we believe her.
