I don’t believe in skipping dessert, but I do believe that any dessert one eats should be extremely delicious. (I have a similar philosophy regarding cocktails.) Whether delicious is a Snicker’s cheesecake, a handful of candy corn, or a praline tuile kissed together by angels is up to you. Desserts are also an excellent venue for skin-beautifying ingredients.
As usual, consuming skin-beautifying ingredients for dessert is largely about finding ways to get more brightly colored berries in there. Luckily, that’s easy. Personally I do not know that there is a better dessert in the world than in-season berries on a well-made tart or a zabaione. Or just throw them in a glass of milk; that’s good too.
In addition to the Omega 3-rich avocado and the vitamin and antioxidant-packed berries we see every week, other skin-beautifying ingredients that get a chance to shine at the end of the meal are chocolate and sweet potatoes.
Dark chocolate is a “superfood” in that it’s been shown to have a ton of antioxidant activity. According to WebMD, we should be looking for non-alkalized cocoa and chocolate. Alkalization makes chocolate less bitter, but it also destroys the antioxidant benefits.
Sweet potatoes are one of the very healthful foods that makes its way into some rich, spicy desserts. The sweet potato contains Omega 3 fatty acids, zinc, and vitamins A, B, C, K, and E, all of which helps keep skin plump and glowing while protecting the skin from damage and helping to prevent acne and repair damage as it occurs. (No sunscreen is perfect.) The sweet potato is also an excellent source of beta-carotene, which turns into vitamin A in the body and helps prevent signs of aging, and anthrocyanin, which helps protect against pigmentation and redness.
Some people like to put sweet potato slices on their eyes to get rid of dark circles, or use mashed sweet potato as a face mask. That’s all well and good, but you can also just make a pie out of it. I am Team Pie.
