Fall is coming, temperatures are dropping and soon we’ll all be bundled up like adorable little woolly burritos. I, for one, welcome this change. Tights and cardigans are my jam and I like seeing dudes wrapped up in flannels and boots instead of shorts and sandals like giant toddlers.
Clothes in the autumn are like cookies in the winter and barbecues in the summer–superior. Particularly for menswear. While men’s clothing options are typically more limited than the femme selection, in the fall, there are far more options for dudes who want to express themselves through outfits. ‘Tis the season for layering but not hiding all of your layers under a massive coat.
Coats are potentially the greatest boon for men’s fashion. One could argue that they are symbolically the most masculine item of clothing other than the jock strap. Fill in the blanks here to see what I mean:
- The man offered his _____ to his shivering date.
- Susie has been wearing Jimmy’s letterman ____ since they started going steady.
- The gentleman took off his _____ and laid it over the puddle so the mademoiselle could safely cross.
Are you on board with me? If no–it’s jackets, dummy.
These are just a few of the options for fall jackets for manly types:
Denim- If you can pull a jean jacket off, you should wear the shit out of one. Denim jackets are a simple celebration of Americana.
Chore/Work Jacket-There are a number of iterations of the classic chore coat. This fitted type will make you look like the mayor of Swoontown, USA.

Military Field Jacket- When I was in high school, I wore my boyfriend’s vintage army jacket as a dirtbag version of sporting my steady date’s letterman jacket. While green army jackets will always be a staple, find one in an unconventional color, waterproofed or hooded and it will remain a classic but with an unexpected twist.

Sports Coat- I don’t love it anymore, but when I was a sensitive teen, I loved when dudes wore sports coats with hoodies underneath. Weezer forever.
$328 via JCrew
Duffle Coat- The sexy human version of Paddington Bear…that came out wrong. A duffle coat with toggles is the perfect choice for a cozy sweetie pie type.
$135 via Asos
Barn Jacket- Hey there fancy pants, what a timeless jacket you have.
$128 via JCrew
Parka- What an easy and warm way to look like a cool guy from a 90s band.
$202 via Asos
A Jacket Like the Brokeback Mountain Guys’- I mean, look at them.

Jackets, like shoes and most other menswear items, are best when they are simple and utilitarian without being boring. Please let us know in the comments what kinds of transitional outwear you think look best on men or if you are a man, on your body.
