The Spring 2014 shows are in full swing at New York Fashion Week–we have three whole days left and a lot of looks to parse, in addition to the hundreds we’ve already sifted through. While this NYFW has been a pretty staid affair–with lots of typical Spring shapes, floral prints, stripes, citrus colors–there’s at least one very notable trend all over the runways: the crop top.
Yes, that style currently very popular with actresses aged 18-25. We’ve seen them all over red carpets this summer and largely understood them to be a natural, if not unfortunate, symptom of the year’s ’90s nostalgia. What we didn’t anticipate, however, was the apparent ubiquity designers are forecasting for next Spring. As in, a whole year from now. Another year of crop tops…?
Here’s a sampling of Spring 2014′s many, many versions:
Clean structure at Derek Lam.
Ladylike latex and fetish footwear at Thakoon.
…And a bit of a peplum as well.
Another all-white look at Vivienne Tam, this time with crop top.
A safari-appropriate crop at Diane von Furstenberg.
Still more white at Tibi, with a black crop for contrast.
For when it’s too chilly for regular crops at Rebecca Taylor.
At Jonathan Simkhai.
Preppy contrast at Lacoste.
Very little material at Jill Stuart.
And much more, also at Stuart.
Suno (and their excellent Spring 14 sandals).
Perforated crop and matching jacket at Helmut Lang.
Elise Crombez (!) at rag & bone.
A bouclé crop at Peter Som.
And something a little more office-appropriate?
Moody stripes at Richard Chai.
