Lady Gaga is on the cover of Elle, and while the issue itself won’t be out until September 24, the cover image has been released and it’s pretty striking, even for Lady Gaga.
“Gaga has incredible features that you could stare at all day long,” said photographer Ruth Hogben, who shot Gaga with a dramatically toned-down makeup look. For the cover she wears minimal eye makeup and a bright, semi-sheer pink lip. Her eyes look really green.
This certainly isn’t a no-makeup look (we never believe “Stars Without Makeup!” articles anyway) but it’s an elegant and relatively minimal look for the star, who recently was walking around with makeup that made her look like a murder clown.
Instead of the mermaid wig she’s been sporting around town, Gaga is wearing a white pony hair necklace and a pink raccoon fur headpiece from Schiaparelli on top of her head. She gets to wear more Schiaparelli in the shoot inside, as according to MTV she wore Christian Lacroix for Schiaparelli couture, which was flown out from Paris with two assistants just for the day.
Inside, the toned-down look is even more striking. She’s got a windblown platinum wig and natural makeup, with a pair of bedazzled, stiletto boots by Gaga’s new BFF, Donatella Versace. Another look pairs a plain white button-down shirt with a full-length feather skirt that we need in our closet right now. Immediately.
“We played up her natural radiance with bold furs from Chanel and Versace,” said Elle creative director Joe Zee.
The relatively toned down appearance for Gaga is probably just a momentary diversion, as just yesterday Gaga appeared on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live and told Andy Cohen that she thought flip-flops were a “gateway drug” leading to sweatpants and no sex. She called them the “downfall of many relationships.”
Gaga told Elle that her favorite outfit so far is still the famous meat dress. Frankly, we’d much rather have the pretty feathers.
