Rodarte‘s awkward, L.A.-inspired Spring 2014 collection is already up for sale as a trunk show on Moda Operandi (aka Net-A-Porter for people with even more money than the people shopping Net-A-Porter), which provides an excellent opportunity for some armchair price gawping. We all know Rodarte is expensive, but just how much would the plaid shirt shown above sell for?
$1,495. It’s a nice, wearable shirt and definitely looks better on the buttoned-up Moda Operandi model than it did on the runway, but it’s still $1,495 for a plaid silk blouse. A silk blouse is an excellent thing to have in one’s wardrobe because it can be dressed up or down and go with jeans, skirts, over dresses, etc. I am very much Team Silk Blouse, but this Rodarte blouse costs the same as seven Equipment blouses, or about 16 Equipment blouses from Neiman’s Last Call. Is it seven times the quality? Will it last seven times as long? I’m skeptical.
If you want to put together the rest of the runway look, the big dumb studded belt is $1,610. the suspenders are $1,150, the white satin bra is $828, the skirt is $1,495, the shoes are $955, and the white baseball cap with the embroidered scorpion is $195, bringing the total price to $7,728.
But what if you are filthy rich and you need something to wear to a Showgirls-theme Champagne gala? First, invite me to go with you because that sounds awesome. Second, buy this Rodarte dress for $8,050:
Don’t worry, it’s an investment piece. We’re sure you’ll get a lot of wear out of this $8,050 leopard, fringe, and crocodile-embossed faux leather dress. (You don’t get real leather for less than $10,000.)
“But Liz,” you say, “I am Miley Cyrus and I plan on legally marrying a large foam finger this weekend in Vegas and getting divorced three days later. What should I wear?”
Don’t worry, Miley, Rodarte has you covered. Just wear your “so fashion” white leggings with this $6,440 fringed sequin bra top and nobody will ever be able to question your edginess again.
The $860 snakeskin shoes are pretty great and seem surprisingly reasonable by comparison. The rest of the collection is available for pre-order on Moda Operandi for the next five days, but try not to spend too much on the site or you might start to think of a $200 baseball cap as “a steal.”
