Miley Cyrus has ruined a lot of things. Dykey haircuts. Twerking. Your innocent memories of Hannah Montana. But now she has gone a few steps further and ruined the Platonic concept of Art, or at least one previously respectable manifestation thereof. Good going, Miley.
The administration of Michigan’s Grand Valley State University has removed a sculpture after students started riding it naked in an homage to Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” video. Long a campus landmark, the giant steel pendulum had been hanging outside the Padnos Hall science building without incident since 1995.
“We’ve been reviewing this over the last couple of weeks, trying to decide whether we really need to look at structural integrity of the installation,” said facilities VP Tim Thimmesch. “We decided to have the ball removed and put into storage for now.”
Naturally, this was a rallying cry for the civic minded students, who have been protesting outside the building ever since.
Will the non-college-attending starlet’s prurient display of sadness ruin this prized architectural monstrosity forever? Will the campus ever heal from this ugly rift? Will the university’s administration decide it’s safe to ride the pendulum in the nude, or is this the end of the line for it? One thing’s for certain: “Wrecking Ball” is still a terrible fucking song.
