Actresses Malin Akerman, guest, Jane Lynch, Michelle Dockery and Kaley Cuoco arrive at the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on September 22, 2013 in Los Angeles, California.
Wow, last night’s Emmys ceremony was a tricky red carpet to judge. By which we mean, looks for the most part were your typical awards show turf (big, bold and boring) but the rest of them were interesting in all the wrong ways (weird bodices, strange appliqués, super exaggerated flounces) (but we’ll get to that)–leaving us with a somewhat motley crew of occasionally very beautiful winners, some of which are a little odd. Let’s take a look.
Laura Dern‘s Naeem Kahn combined exquisite beading (as Kahn is wont) with a very unusual acid pink/salmon hue.
She did it! We always want to see Christina Hendricks look as gorgeous as she should. but her red carpet choices are frequently odd and unflattering. Last night’s Christian Siriano was bewitching.
This will probably polarize readers but our love of prints brings us to Julianna Margulies–the way her ink black hair sets off the print is what keeps us here.
The always immaculate Rose Byrne in blush pink Calvin Klein–enough great minimalism to balance that slash of midriff.
Some of you will say Sandrine Holt‘s dress looks like a carfts project but we like it. Especially the top half.
We love when Tina Fey goes bombshell.
Sarah Hylund in another probably controversial choice–yes, it’s a little over styled, a little too much. But the color is spectacular.
Elisabeth Moss in black and white Andrew Gn, a nice choice for her blonde hair.
Carrie Brownstein (flanked by Portlandia‘s Fred Armisen and director Jonathan Krisel) looking quite polished in stripes.
Sidenote: if you were in Sleater-Kinney, we will probably never put you on the Worst Dressed list. No matter what.
Yes, Jewel wore a fluttery, flowery mermaid dress with lots of delicate little things on it–but the shades of rose and pink, etc look pretty exquisite on her, too.
Kerry Washington, almost always a winner, in a just slightly unusual Marchesa.
Sofia Vergara does the same goddamn thing every awards show–a skintight, boldly hued showstopper (usually by Vera Wang) that does little beyond highlight her dope hourglass figure.
…But said figure is so dope. So it pretty much always works.
