Some days everything seems to go wrong. Maybe someone spoiled Breaking Bad on Facebook or there is an unknown source of flies somewhere in the kitchen, or maybe both those things happened. On those days, it helps to remember that we live in a world in which Naomi Campbell exists.
Naomi Campbell is one of the most successful and longest working models around. One look at her reminds the world of why the 80s and 90s “Glamazons” were a thing, and she doesn’t appear to have changed appreciably since then. I don’t know what kind of deal she worked out with a crossroads demon, but Naomi Campbell is just wonderfully, shockingly beautiful. And while other models talk about insecurities and feeling ugly, Campbell has always seemed extremely confident, as though she is fully aware that she got two scoops of the world’s supply of beauty and feels it would be rude to pretend that wasn’t the case. But for 10 solid days before walking in the Versace show this season, one of the most beautiful, successful, and confident models in the world completely avoided solid food.
Naomi Campbell has always maintained that she eats healthfully and includes indulgences like chocolate and potato chips, but she told The Edit that to prepare for the Versace show she actually gave up solid food and lived for a week and a half on liquids alone, like a sick baby bird.
“For ten days prior to the Versace show, I just drank juice – carrot, ginger, pineapple – to cleanse.”
OK, really, let’s just all be honest and admit that is not what the word “cleanse” means. “Cleanse” means to clean something, and she is not talking about taking a shower or trying a new body scrub. The Naomi Campbell liquid diet is not about being clean; she’s talking about not eating for a week and a half to look as skinny as possible on the runway.
We really need to stop using the word “cleanse” as socially acceptable crib for “look as skinny as possible.” You are not full of toxins, and while putting a head of kale in your $600 blender can be very tasty, it does not make it more healthful or “clean.”
But the idea of Naomi Campbell on a juice cleanse is frankly terrifying. She’s known for having a hot temper to start with, and going off food doesn’t tend to make one feel kind and gentle. Hell, it’s been about three hours since lunch and I’m about to get in a fight with my cat. Naomi Campbell on a 10-day fast sounds like the perfect horror movie monster.
