From a construction standpoint, there’s not that much difference between overalls and a jumper. They’re both trousers that connect to a top. But somehow while jumpsuits have become de rigueur on the red carpet, overalls, like flip-flops, still seem reserved for off-duty looks. But somehow Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Melanie Fiona is kind of making them work for her on the red carpet at the ASCAP’s Annual “Women Behind The Music” series.
Fiona describes her style as “Bohemian Couture,” and she wore her overalls with a shiny green top and a big floppy hat. She rolled the legs up to mid-calf, which makes her look a bit like she’s going fishing, and she also let the bib part of the overalls just hang down from her waist. But somehow she still looks pretty cool.
For a moment there I thought red carpet overalls might be a thing now, but after a bit of thought I’m pretty convinced they’re still not OK, and Fiona is just doing a really good job of Pulling Them Off.
Lots of celebrities wear overalls when they’re out doing celebrity things, but overalls don’t often turn up on red carpets. When they do, it’s usually not to great effect. Fergie didn’t rock hers so well on the Teen Choice Awards carpet back in 2005.
While I’m impressed by Fiona’s mastery of the denim bib, overalls continue to intimidate me because I will never understand how people manage to look good in them. Clearly some people can rock the overalls, but most of those people are under 8 years old. I’ve been trying to look cute in overalls since 1994, and I couldn’t find a single pair that didn’t make me look short and pear-shaped. It was a distressing decade.
Jumpsuits and rompers used to be a bit controversial on the red-carpet, but the world seems to have come to love them. A well-executed evening jumpsuit looks impossibly chic and fashion-forward in a way that always makes me wonder where the wearer found it or if there are minimum height requirements for that sort of thing. But when it comes to overalls, I still don’t think we’re there yet.
