Apparently crash dieting before Halloween is a thing, but that’s news to me. I usually spend most of October stocking up on candy and an extra fat layer so I will be nice and insulated once we hit November. But apparently people everywhere are trying desperately to slim down before October 31st, and to me, a holiday where you’re literally allowed to dress up as a burlap sack seems like a sort of silly reason to obsess.
Here are the reasons that you should diet:
1. Because you want to.
Here are the reasons that you should not diet:
1. Because you feel pressured to.
I’m not going to tell anyone that they shouldn’t go on a diet if they feel like losing a few pounds, because I’m not about to tell anyone what to do with their body. But the obsessive culture of “everyone could stand to lose 5 pounds” and tells us we have to diet diet diet nonstop is useless and counterproductive. It turns every event in our lives into an opportunity to freak out for months beforehand, trying to slim down (everybody here’s been to a high school reunion). I’ve fallen into that trap before, and a few times I even successfully obsessed my way to a slimmer figure before some big event. Looking back, it wasn’t worth it. The feeling of accomplishment was completely cut by the feelings of inadequacy.
Here is how I have felt good after dieting: when I do it healthily and slowly, with no huge pressure to meet some arbitrary goal by an upcoming event. When the goal is to be healthy and feel good, not look skinnier than the last time my college friends saw me.
So if you’re frantically trying to slim down before Halloween, just cut yourself a break. Take some of the pressure off and diet or not diet. Just don’t go crazy and hurt yourself. Isn’t the best part of the Halloween stealing children’s candy, anyways? Asking for a friend.
