The Fifty Shades of Grey Movie Just Lost Its Male Lead

When we first heard that the Fifty Shades of Grey movie had lost its male lead, we were very worried. But the originally cast movie lead, Charlie Hunnam’s penis, is doing just fine. But Charlie Hunnam has decided he wants nothing to do with the icky porn version of sadomasochistic Twilight fanfic and left the project, taking his penis with him.

The Fifty Shades of Grey movie has been having a bear of a time figuring out a cast. Last month it was announced that Sons of Anarchy’s ridiculously handsome star Charlie Hunnam and Ben and Kate’s Dakota Johnson would be playing the leads of the momcore sex book, but Entertainment Weekly just announced that Hunnam has dropped out of the project, and the world needs another Christian Grey.

“The filmmakers of Fifty Shades of Grey and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey,” the studio said in a statement.

Consider our interest piqued. Aside from a dye job, what sort of preparation is necessary to play a handsome billionaire guy who talks like the vampire from True Blood? They could probably have just gotten a fluffer.

Many Fifty Shades of Grey fans were annoyed by the news of Hunnam’s casting in a way reminiscent of the way fans were annoyed by the castings of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, Heath Ledger as The Joker, and even Michael Keaton as Batman way back in the day. The lesson to take from this is that fans are almost always annoyed by casting news and that fan rage shouldn’t be taken too seriously. But Hunnam did get more than his share of it.

“There are so many fans of that book and I know that on the surface, I’m probably not what everybody imagined,” Hunnam told Entertainment Weekly before the news of his departure. “Because reading is so personal and people bring a character to life in their imagination, they feel ownership over that character. That’s daunting if I allowed myself to think about it too much. I’m taking it very seriously and intend to explore the nature of who this character is, what motivates him — and also dress up nice and look good in those suits.”

We’ve loved Hunnam in Sons of Anarchy, Queer as Folk, and the brilliantly funny Undeclared, so we’re actually pretty glad to see him getting out of Fifty Shades of Grey while the getting is good. There’s no word on what poor sap they’re going to find to replace him, but we’ll let you know as soon as we do.

Lifetime should just do the movie and get this over with. I don’t think any good actor should attach itself to it. Matt Bomer, have a seat, you are too good for this.

I know! Apparently a vocal segment of fans are clamoring for Bomer, and I’m like, “Nooo! You must resist!”

How about Jared Leto? Fifty Shades of Grey can have Jared Leto. Or Shia LeBoeuf. Charlie Sheen, too.

A million times yes to charlie sheen in this. I don’t know a single person who would not pay money to see this.

I think that might be the only way I’d be willing to see it. I’d line up for that as though it were Star Wars.

Oh my god, agreed so hard.

I’m like, isn’t this a little late for the whole thing? Wouldn’t a movie 2 years ago when the hype was huge been a MUCH better choice? It’s like no one even cares about it now- on top of the whole thing just being offensive trash to begin with.

I tried to read the first book, and i hardly ever skip any, but this one burned me out at chapter 2

In an intellectual way, I’m relieved to see my pretend boyfriend is holding out for better roles. In a pervy, leering sort of way, I’m a little disappointed.
