Last night in LA, Steve McQueen premiered his latest project 12 Years A Slave–a film that in its short life span has already managed to generate a ton of awards season buzz as well as a reputation for gutting intensity.

…Luckily, our concern at present is only with the red carpet. Here’s what attendees wore to last night’s premiere.

Like the material and overall shape of Kelsey Scott‘s dress, can’t we help but feel the fit is off.

Riqua Hailes wore a studded (sequined?) jumpsuit.

A perforated look (and very high hair) on Gloria Govan.

Russell Simmons (L) and rapper Common Russell Simmons and Common, both in preppy/collegiate looks.

We don’t know about these capes that mimic a jacket wore over the shoulders–are they witty or twee? Laura Govan confuses.

Not sure we get Ming-Na We‘s look, especially the shoes and dress together.

Children are exempt from red carpet criticism; Storm Reid is way cute, though.
