Did Party City Simply Photoshop Standard Models Larger Instead Of Getting Plus-Size Models?

While plus-size models are steadily gaining traction in the fashion world via beautiful, talented women like Robyn Lawley, among others, there is still a decided lack of non-standard models featured by major companies. A worrying observation from Consumerist may exemplify just how reluctant companies are to hire plus-size women, as it appears that Party City has — instead of paying for models in plus-sizes — simply photoshopped their standard sized clothing models to be larger. Yes, seriously.

The photos, as collected by a tipster to Consumerist:

It really does appear that Party City wanted to save money (or simply didn’t care to hire any plus-size models whatsoever), so they stretched out some of their products’ photos. And not very effectively — these all look wonky, weird and aren’t particularly effective.

Now, I’m not 100% convinced because I am (A) too optimistic and (B) hoping the company will explain itself, but I do think the evidence is pretty damning. And if this does prove to be true, then it is incredibly disappointing. It’s simultaneously conflicting, though, considering models are typically ‘shopped to look thinner rather than larger. Nevertheless, I think companies who wish to sell products and use models to do so should utilize models within the actual sizes of the products they’re trying to sell.

So, what do you folks think? Did Party City photoshop their models to embiggen their features? And, if you do think this is an accurate accusation, is there a justifiable reason for them to have done so?

I hate that part of me is like, “Well, at least they’re ATTEMPTING to show the product on a larger body” because so many sites don’t even do that unless they’re solely plus-sized. Sigh.

This is ridiculous. Their job is to show you the product and sell it. They’re under no obligation to hire twice as many models just because they offer two size ranges. If they’d used only plus-sized models and shrunk them down, would you be just as appalled? What about if they’d used one average-sized mannequin and edited it smaller and larger to represent the two sizes?
It’s a complete waste of time to decide to be offended by this. Anyone responsible for selling this volume of products by catalog/website understands the incredible burden for creating assets such as photos. This is a reasonable and resourceful solution! Think about it- they COULD have just offered it as another size option on the “regular” sized product. At least they pulled it out separately!
      Get over it.

Plot Twist: They used plus sized models and normal photo brushing to bring the legs down to size.

        Dun dun DUUUUN!

This was SOOOO easy to look up and disprove. They used real (and beautiful!) plus-sized models for the actual costume page. Looks like the only place they stretched photos was in their “Tights” and leggings pictures. http://www.partycity.com/product/adult+saloon+madame+costume+plus+size.do?navSet=178986

You’re so true. I think they were just trying to save resources, not offend anybody!
