Despite the fact that I write about photoshopping and beauty standards all the time, I still admittedly have a hard time internalizing how inaccurate and unattainable they really are. Seeing a photo’s before and after is one thing; recognizing how it goes from being in its original state to the masterpiece of a random editor’s hand is another. These GIFs from a video showing exactly how one woman’s image evolved into a significantly different one exemplifies this beautifully (well, bizarrely, really).
The video, titled “Body Evolution,” was created by Global Democracy a while back, and has been making the rounds to show just how drastic the alterations can be when it comes to ads, commercials, photo spreads and more. Check out these GIFs of the action that the video shows:
Neck lengthening? Eye enlarging? Shoulder raising? Good god, I feel like I am continuously reminded that there are things people believe are “wrong” with human beings’ appearances that I am completely oblivious of. Stills of the before and after effects on her body:
Obviously, these GIFs are not necessarily applicable to the process behind each and every company’s advertisements or all the fashion editorials we’ve ever seen, but I do think that many, many are not dissimilar to this. I mean, magazine covers photoshop Victoria’s Secret models and huge pop stars alike, so it is hardly a stretch to say that these beauty standards are anything but pervasive and practically synonymous with celebrity and fashion photography, at this point.
