The New Vogue Cover Is Like A Painting (In A Good Way!)

jessica chastain vogue cover

We give Vogue a lot of trouble for over-zealous retouching, so ordinarily when we say a new cover “looks like a painting,” we don’t mean it in a positive way.

But! The December cover of American Vogue has hit the internet and it’s actually a real beauty: Jessica Chastain indeed looks like a painting and it’s intentional! But more on that in a second.

First off, the critical takeaway is that this is Chastain’s first Vogue cover–and sure to help cement her status as a rising style star (there’s got to be a less obnoxious term for that). We’ve been sweating Chastain’s look for a while–sophisticated yet slightly off beat, grown-up but daring–but this isn’t her first fashion rodeo either (she’s already had an Yves Saint Laurent campaign to herself).

Annie Leibovitz shot Chastain for the accompanying editorial which recreates classic paintings–including the cover art, in which Chastain dons an arresting yellow Theyskens’ Theory dress. The cover is an allusion to Flaming June by Frederic Leighton:

Leibovitz always seems to have a lot of fun with these “famous beautiful person recreates X”-style editorials–she famously imagined Natalia Vodianova as Alice–so we’re looking forward to the rest of the editorial.
