In Defense Of Lily Allen’s Thighs

Lily Allen has received some criticism about her latest music video “Hard Out Here,” and felt compelled to respond personally. In part of her statement, she addressed why she was surrounded by scantily clad dancers in bikinis while she was relatively covered up:

If I could dance like the ladies can, it would have been my arse on your screens; I actually rehearsed for two weeks trying to perfect my twerk, but failed miserably. If I was a little braver, I would have been wearing a bikini too, but I do not and I have chronic cellulite, which nobody wants to see. What I’m trying to say is that me being covered up has nothing to do with me wanting to disassociate myself from the girls, it has more to do with my own insecurities and I just wanted to feel as comfortable as possible on the shoot day.

I get it. I understand feeling insecure and not wanting to feel exposed. But despite Lily’s feelings, I super wish that she had shown them. I like Lily Allen’s body. I think she’s beautiful and sexy, and Joanna articulated the feeling of seeing a body with “flaws:” ”I’ve always liked Lily Allen’s cellulite. She’d perform with her thighs out and I wouldn’t feel like such a gremlin.” Had Allen chosen to get in that bikini and twerk with those dancers, I think it could have added another message (in addition to the awesome Miley criticism). She ran right up to the line with brash comments about being shamed for her body, but stopped before really being able to offer a giant fuck you.

I’m on tricky ground here because I don’t think celebrities have the obligation to be role models, and I feel badly that her insecurities are something she has to defend online. But I can’t help but feel like we should be taking every possible opportunity to showcase diverse body types as desirable, sexual, cellulite and all. If Allen had worn the bikini, we’d be talking about how Allen made a huge statement about body image instead of just talking about it.

I couldn’t agree more. I think getting up there with her “gremlin thighs” (which look perfectly normal and awesome to me) would have shown she was willing to put her money where her mouth is, instead of just letting backup dancers do it.
