In 2001, it was Beyonce and Jay-Z. In 2009, it was Taylor Swift and John Mayer. In 2013, it’s Dakota Fanning and Jamie Strachan. With all of Hollywood’s fleeting trends (remember Ugg boots and tiny dogs? Remember all-denim suits on the red carpet?), one recurrent theme has stood the test of time: grown adult men dating 19-year-olds.
A former member of the “I could be a high school senior and he could be my uncle” club, Evan Rachel Wood, recently opened up about her past relationship with Marilyn Manson. Everyone’s favorite Across the Universe star, eyeliner enthusiast, and actress-who-could-also-pass-for-a-suburban-Hot-Topic-employee discusses the trials and tribulations of dating a man who once sold t-shirts to kids that said “Kill Your Parents.”
Wood tells The Daily Beast,
If people were wondering why I was acting so-called crazy or like a teenager, it’s because I was. People go through phases. People make mistakes. People go through life and don’t get it right every time.
She goes on to compare her May-December love affair to the more-public relationships of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth. She’s not delusional about her level of fame, saying, “I was never a Bieber or a Cyrus,” but she has some supportive things to say to the A-list youngsters:
I can’t imagine what it’s like to be [Bieber]. When you’re a teenager in an adult career, people expect you to be perfect and expect you to never make mistakes or be a reckless teenager. And then when you are, they give you such a really hard time for it. You have to remind them that you’re still a kid.
Uh, I think Justin’s outlandish strip club behavior has reminded us that he’s a kid, but I see where you’re coming from, Evan. It’s nice to hear a big sister figure speaking up for the trampled-on younger celebs. She adds:
Like, do people remember when they were that age? On this global level, people freak out. They like to be high and mighty and say, ‘Oh, I’ve never done anything like that.’ But yes you have. Everyone’s been a crazy kid.
Totally. It seems like just yesterday that I was tongue-kissing a goth rocker in a blood shower.
Joking aside, keep being the freaking-weird-but-endearing role model that you are, Evan Rachel Wood. Maybe you’re exactly what America’s youth needs. (Yikes.)
