Red carpet premieres for films with primarily male casts tend to be a bit dull. Without a movie star in a giant frothy ball gown, what’s the point? But that guideline goes right out the window in certain situations, namely when Benedict Cumberbatch is involved. At last night’s Berlin premiere of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, we got a fascinating parade of good-looking men in smart suits (usually blue), and a rare glimpse of Sherlock Holmes in velvet.
As the lone lady star in attendance, Evangeline Lilly had to do all the heavy lifting in a black silk tulle Alberta Ferretti from Fall 2013.
You might not know this about me, but I am a sucker for tiers of pleated tulle. How much fun does this dress look to walk around in? I would swish everywhere, picking up all the dust and not giving any fucks because I would look like the evil queen in Snow White.
The makeup I’m not sold on. Evangeline Lilly normally glows, and here she looks washed out. This makeup would probably look good with a brightly colored dress, but when paired with the black she just looks wan.
The red nail polish is great.
We almost had a heart attack because we thought darling Martin Freeman was wearing a three-piece denim suit.
Orlando Bloom‘s tiny, shiny suit is not rubbing us the right way. The peaked lapel and pocket piping makes him look like he’s wearing formal pajamas.
Check out Aidan Turner in his bright blue suit. Blue appears to have been on the menu last night. We like to imagine a Hobbit actor lunch table caucus: “On Mondays, we wear blue!”
Richard Armitage is smokey. Bonus points for the tie pin.
John Bell wore Doc Martens and a kilt. For some reason we find his curly blonde leg hair strangely charming. He seems like a fun guy to hang out with.
So does Sylvester McCoy, whose suit is huge but he is rocking the look anyway.
Luke Evans is a rebel, because he is wearing purple. Could these guys bring vests back? It seems unlikely, but we appreciate the effort.
Andy Serkis wore a cool red tie. It’s OK if you don’t recognize Andy Serkis, because he’s Gollum.
And then there’s Benedict Cumberbatch …
Benedict Cumberbatch is wearing blue velvet. And a bow tie. OK, fess up. Which of you found a magic genie lamp this morning?
Go behind this big dragon poster with you? Sure, we’ll do that.
We could just post these pictures all day. We probably will.
