Demi Lovato Shares Heartbreaking New Details About Her Eating Disorder

And on the sixth day, God created Demi Lovato and let her have dominion over all the earth.

I’ve made it no secret in the past that I adore Demi Lovato. In a celebrity culture full of models who claim they popped out of the womb looking flawless and Lady Gaga tweeting that “pop stars don’t eat,” Demi is an honest, real-life role model for young people dealing with addiction, self-harm, and eating disorders. She’s currently working on a tell-all memoir about her experiences with mental illness, and the 21-year-old recently opened up to Access Hollywood about some of the more gruesome details of her past– including the fact that her eating disorders began in grade school:

It was always there, but then I just acted on it at around eight or nine years old. I started overeating, compulsively overeating. I would bake cookies and then eat the whole pan. I went from doing that to being unhappy with my body. I went to just completely starving myself and that turned into throwing up and starving myself and it was just this crazy battle going on inside of me. It got really difficult and I would throw up, and it would just be blood. It was something that I realized, if I don’t stop this, I am going to die.

Geez. Way to break a girl’s heart into a million pieces over the course of one paragraph.

The singer goes on to admit that she realized she was an alcoholic when she was 19, that she “couldn’t go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine,” and that she frequently smuggled illicit drugs onto airplanes. In other words, this is a woman who’s been through some real shit.

While Demi is certainly not the first famous person to admit to having a drug problem, she seems to be making more of an effort than most to use her personal story to help other people. Her book, Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year, provides daily affirmations for people facing similar challenges. According to one review on Amazon, “The book is filled with inspirational quotes and cool meditation tips to help you chill the fudge out and start loving life.” Sounds to me like the whole world needs a little Demi.

About her upcoming memoir, Demi tells Entertainment Weekly, “I’ll most likely end up saying everything. Maybe it’ll help other people in the industry who are headed down the wrong path.” What a freaking champion.

Not unusual though. I remember being about that age and crying myself to sleep about my body.
