The 10 Most Fascinating People In Fashion This Year

Carolina Herrera - Front Row - Spring 2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week As 2013 draws to a close, everyone feels compelled to look back over the year and see where we stand. It was a big year for fashion, so let’s take a look at the 10 most fascinating people who impacted the fashion world this year.

The Most Watched Sartorial Choices

1. Kate Middleton

kate middleton dress closer The Duchess of Cambridge was easily the most critiqued, scrutinized, and glorified wearer of clothes in all of 2013. The world couldn’t get enough of her sartorial choices (us included!), and every single thing she wore from her animal print maternity dress, sparkly princess gown, and her best look ever got the world’s full attention.

2. Michelle Obama

The 36th Kennedy Center Honors Gala The First Lady is probably second only to Middleton when it comes to media scrunity over her outfits. Her biggest sartorial moments of 2013 included causing quite a ruckus with her blunt bangs, killing it in Carolina Herrera, and wearing the shit out of a Marchesa gown while her husband looked on adoringly.

Models With Issues

3. Robyn Lawley

H&M Hosts Private Concert With Lana Del Rey - Arrivals Lawley is one of the most in demand plus size models around these days, but it was only in October of this year that a major men’s magazine noticed her. Lawley has become more and more of major player in the modeling world over 2013, and uses her platform to talk about body image issues. She wrote a hugely popular article about the thigh gap trend and encouraged a public conversation about unrealistic beauty expectations.

4. Iman

iman boycott This year, supermodel Iman has called for a change in the fashion world to include more diverse models, instead of the typical all-white runway shows we’re accustomed to seeing. This summer, she called for a boycott of designers who only cast white models in their shows, and eventually name checked Céline creative director Phoebe Philo, for a total lack of model diversity under her leadership.

CEOs and Bigwigs who got it all wrong

5. Mike Jeffries, Abercrombie & Fitch CEO

Clothing Retailer Abercrombie And Fitch Reports Strong Quarterly Earnings Abercrombie & Fitch has long been criticized for its total lack of any common sense and patent refusal to make clothing for most of the population. This year alone, a story came out about the awful work environment Jeffries fosters, Jeffries issues a half assed apology for his bullying, fat shaming policies, and A&F announced that they would begin selling plus size clothing, as if anyone’s going to patronize that shit hole.

6. Chip Wilson, Lululemon Founder

Wilson had a rough year. After recalling tons of designer yoga pants because they were see-through, Wilson announced that it wasn’t really that they had made a poor product, but in fact fatties just weren’t their target audience. He has since announced that he will be stepping down as Chairman of the Board. Good freaking riddance.

Models Who Could Be Your Best Friend

7. Karlie Kloss

2013 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show - Alternative Views The Victoria’s Secret Angel has had quite a visible year, and she’s done a good deal to make us all feel enchanted by how relatable she is. Kloss partnered with Momofuku to make a branded cookie with an accompanying hilarious promo, revealed that she carried around a purse full of said cookies, and got naked and made out with Blurred Lines star Emily Ratajkowski.

8. Jourdan Dunn

Dunn had a big year (including scoring a role in Beyoncé’s new video ‘XO’), and became ubiquitous on runways all over Fashion Week. It also doesn’t hurt that she has a hilarious story about turning down a job at Abercrombie & Fitch, which she handled with grace.

9. Cara Delevingne

Swarovski Sparkles In The 2013 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Delevingne was perhaps one the more polarizing model-bffs. Tumblr spent the whole year being particularly obsessed with her, but some people tired of her shtick. Her constant pretense that she eats and eats and eats and just wakes up looking like that got old fast, but at least she has a pretty singing voice and we can’t wait to see the reality show based around the home she plans to share with Rihanna.

10. Kate and Laura Mulleavy, Rodarte

Rodarte shirt expensive The Mulleavy sisters normally do beautiful work, but their Spring 2014 collection stunned everyone with just how awful a piece of clothing can really be. In addition to being outrageously priced, the pieces were panned with a mix of utter shock and revulsion. When I think back on the year in fashion, it’s hard not to think about the crash and burn of this collection.

Honorable Mention: Anna Wintour

Puglia/Getty Images) It would be silly to talk about anything in fashion without mentioning Anna Wintour, The Great Architect of the Fashion Universe. From high on her gilded throne, Wintour pulls the strings making models walk down runways, designers choose crop tops as a trend, and turns otherwise tabloid trash into fashion icons with her approval. She notoriously tried to make the Met Gala more exlusive by raising the price, dropped Miley Cyrus from the cover with no explanation, and apparently bought a $350,000 house with no plans to live in it. She just didn’t want anyone else to have it.

The fact that Robyn Lawley is considered plus-sized is still so strange to me. Oh, wait, forgot, no thigh-gap…

I know! It’s never not weird.

Kate Middleton + Michelle Obama’s wardrobes = flawless to me!
