Ke$ha Checks Into Rehab For Eating Disorder

ke$ha-eating-disorderFew people are as publicly bold and self-confident as Ke$ha, but we’re sad to hear that even someone as seemingly fearless as she is has a difficult time dealing with society’s pressures to adhere to an extreme and restrictive ideal of feminine beauty. Friday she announced that she was checking into rehab to seek treatment for an eating disorder.

“I’m a crusader for being yourself and loving yourself, but I’ve found it hard to practice,” she said in a statement. “I’ll be unavailable for the next 30 days, seeking treatment for my eating disorder.”

US Weekly reports that Ke$ha is attending the Timberline Knolls rehab center, a residential treatment center outside Chicago that specializes in the treatment of anorexia, bulemia, and binge-eating. It’s the same treatment center Demi Lovato used back in 2010.

The news comes just a few days after Ke$ha released her self-directed new video for “Dirty Love,” which debuted on New Year’s Eve.

“Cheers to this year being the best year ever,” she wrote on Twitter. “2014 gon be the year of truth and freedom.”

Celebrities often seem untouchable, or somehow above the body-image issues that plague so many of the rest of us. It’s as though all their fame and money and physical beauty should somehow protect them from the pressures to always be more perfect, but that’s obviously not the case. A rock star like Ke$ha can suffer from an eating disorder, supermodels like Miranda Kerr are Photoshopping themselves thinner on Instagram to depict a “more perfect” form of beauty, and slim movie stars like Jennifer Lawrence can talk about how they’re “obese” for Hollywood. Thinness pressure is a constant, and success and physical beauty don’t protect a person from its effects.

Ke$ha said she’ll be in treatment for 30 days and is hoping to “learn to love myself again, exactly as I am.”
