Red Carpet Rundown: The Weirdly Worst-Dressed At The 2014 Critics’ Choice Awards

Now that we’ve talked about who looked good, it’s time to talk about who looked less than good at the 2014 Critic’s Choice Movie Awards. There were a lot of interesting choices, but unfortunately, “interesting” does not always translate into “good.” Scroll down for the not-so-awesome.

So, Elisabeth Rohm. Her hair and makeup are flawless classic Hollywood, but the dress is way too blah. Is it gray? Is it white? Is she Miss Havisham?

Brie Larson is nominated tonight for her role in Short Term 12. I don’t know much about the movie, but I hear her performance is amazing. I am much less amazed by her Escada dress, which looks like a couch my grandmother would have complimented at Colonial Williamsburg.

Melissa McCarthy‘s hair and makeup look great, but I think that print is overwhelming her. I wanna steal that ring, though.

Emma Thompson, I love you, but that coat looks like a Christmas tree skirt that my crazy great aunt had in the mid eighties. My older female relatives are popping up all over the place, huh?

Abigail Breslin went with the trend of beaded, lacy, long-sleeved dresses, but I think this wishy-washy blue-gray is not her color. Nor is that lipstick her friend.

Read on to see Meryl, Julia and a rare misstep from Cate Blanchett.

Abigail Breslin is really struggling lately, reminds me why I’m so happy I didn’t spend my teen years on the red carpet.

      • Psych Student

I thought her dress was really pretty and I thought she looked stunning in it!

    • keanesian

Ha, I think the brass knuckles are actually the handle to Margot Robbe’s purse.

      • Carrie Murphy

        I figured that out!

    • elle

I honestly feel like everybody just thought to themselves hey we were just at the GGs and had to get dressed up, I don’t feel like doing this again 3 days later. It is the only explanation for so many of these outfits.

    • CMJ

      Leslie Bibb’s shoes? UGH.

      • Carrie Murphy

I originally wrote that her shoes needed to be sent back to a 90s teen movie, but I took it out.

      • CMJ

I thought about writing the same thing and then didn’t.

Am I the only one that is disturbed that the writer of this fashion article can’t recognise an incredibly popular, iconic Alexander McQueen clutch?!

      • Carrie Murphy

Sorry! Not all of us have encyclopedic knowledge of Alexander McQueen clutches in our heads.

      • OhNo

I genuinely am sorry for upsetting you. Honestly, its the only Alexander McQueen bag I’ve ever seen. It’s just incredibly memorable. Sometimes I forget I have an intense memory. Additionally, I should have said didn’t rather than can’t.

      • Julia Sonenshein

        Yes, you are.

      • Samantha Escobar

        Only one, yeah :-

This makes me sad. I read this blog every day… There’s no need to be rude. I think its a valid statement. This is a fashion blog and that’s an incredibly well known fashion item, that has even been discussed by writers here. I apologize if I offended Carrie Murphy. I cannot tell you how incredibly upsetting it is to feel like you’ve found women you can relate to, only to make a silly comment and then be down voted and snarked at by ALL the writer’s here. Says a lot.
I cried. I hope you all poop your pants.

      • OhNo

Excuse me, all is an exaggeration. I should have said three.
I still stand by the pooping though.

      • Samantha Escobar

Okay, okay, I didn’t mean to be mean. :( It’s just frustrating because while we do write for a fashion, beauty and sex blog, many of our writers lean more toward beats unrelated to fashion (plus I feel like when we post primarily about fashion, readers wind up criticizing that, too). And I’m not going to lie, we get very defensive of one another because we have all at some point been sent a little or a shit ton of hate mail. But I’m sorry I got all reactive. :(

As for the last line…I will probably not do that, but perhaps I’ll pee a little.

      • OhNoooo

Thank you very much for replying. I totally understand where you are coming from. People on the internet are so incredibly nasty to one another! I’ve definitely been in situations where I should have been more tactful, especially when it comes to defending those I love.
I enjoy the perspective of this website and that the articles don’t fit in cookie cutter categories. I also enjoy the fashion opinions on here. It is very clear that the writer’s have their own views versus following the rest of the crowd and that is incredibly refreshing, even when I disagree.
I always forget that my verbage and inflection can be difficult to decipher in person, much less through text. My intention was to be cheeky but rereading it… I sound so snotty!
I rescind my previous wishes in regards to loss of bowel control. Everyone takes shitting more seriously than I do, so I’m told that’s actually a mean thing to say. However, I will accept your offering of urine.

I agree with your comment and your response. I got the same treatment from the writers when I disagreed with one of them in a comment. They can be Mean Girls! I hate that it keeps happening to other readers, too. For a women’s site, one that promotes feminism and women’s issues, they sure like to take a swing at anyone who dares to defy their clique logic.

Don’t feel too bad about anything. These writers dish it out every day. They can’t knock you down for doing the same.

    • Samantha Escobar

Margot Robbie is so good looking it’s f’d up. I like her jumpsuit but probably just because I like her, generally speaking.

Also, totally had the same thoughts about Christina Applegate’s dress. First glance: great! Second: oh girl, no.

      • Samantha

Right? I’m not a fan of jumpsuits in general, but her face elevates everything. And she never looks overwhelmed by the clothes she’s wearing.

    • NatalieWashington

I think that Elisabeth Looks beautiful and sweet .

    • Lindsey Conklin

I like Margot Robbie’s look!!! And man, Julia Roberts just hasn’t been getting it right lately

    • ktree

I actually liked all of these, except for Meryl and the Christmas tree skirt.
