Last night’s Hollywood Stands Up To Cancer Event was pretty star-heavy, who took a break from the gowns and crazy, over-the-top looks from awards season. Gwyneth Paltrow‘s David Koma dress particularly stuck out to me after scanning the red carpet, and it’s not great.
I’m very conflicted about this whole thing. When I first saw it, I actually loved it. It’s a great color and shape, I was all prepared to write a glowing post about the dress (not so sold on the rest of the look, but we’ll get to that later). But then I actually looked at it. This no man’s land between the sternum and navel cutout that we’re starting to see (Amy Poehler had a similar, yet more attractive cutout in the same area at the Golden Globes) is very disturbing indeed, and the square shape is too jarring. It creates a small strap to cover Gwyneth’s breasts, locking them in what my colleague Liz Licata astutely called a “boob cage.” Without the cutout, I think the dress would have been fantastic, since the black leather trim would keep things interesting enough. With the cutout, it’s an uncomfortable prison for wayward breasts.
While I love Paltrow’s rare side part and messiness, her makeup takes away from the desired effect. I get that she was going for something minimal, but the pale pink lip color she’s wearing completely washes her out and gives her a somewhat all-blonde, monochrome appearance.
This look was a miss, but then again I’m wearing yoga pants.
