While Marie Antoinette wasn’t the best queen, it’s hard to deny that she looks snazzy in most depictions. Well, many depictions–the ones that don’t depict her being, ahem, lost to history. The one I especially took interest in was, of course, Sofia Coppola‘s featuring Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman. Was it historically accurate, well-acted or even all that good in general? Not really, but the production, costume and makeup design were all exceptionally wonderful.

Check out our makeup tutorial inspired by Marie Antoinette! And honestly, they had so much to work with, so it’s no wonder that the film’s creators went so wild with color and texture:

That said, both Antoinette and Dunst’s hair makeup weren’t exactly good for the everyday lady. So, let’s try out an odd, bright makeup look inspired by Marie, Sofia, Kirsten and cake, but one that’s also wearable enough that, if you so choose, you can simply take elements from and incorporate into a bold daily look.

Step 0: Start off with clean, refreshed skin. Splash a bit of cold water on your skin or, for more precision, spritz a bit of hydrating spray like this one from Evian.

Step 1: Apply a light BB cream to your skin using your fingers, then use a concealer brush like Eco Tools to apply a medium coverage concealer to any blemishes or unevenness.

Step 2: Take a blush brush and apply a bright rouge to the apples of your cheeks; I actually used a bit of orangey-pink cream blush combined with a touch of Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Woodstock to get an even brighter look. Spray some Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray to seal the base.

Step 3: Use an eyeshadow brush to apply a pale peach eyeshadow like Stila Eyeshadow Compact in Starlight loosely on your crease, then blend upward toward your brow. Swipe on a layer of brown or brown-black mascara on upper lashes.

Step 4: Delicately fill in brows a little with a matte pencil a little lighter than your natural brows’ shade, like the Lorac Creamy Eyebrow Pencil, but don’t overdo it–give them a bit of extra polish, not a full fill.

Step 5: Dot on a little Benefit High Beam to the Cupid’s Bow to emphasize their shape. Add highlighter right underneath the spot your brow arches most, too, as well as to your eyes’ inner corners and to the upper parts of your cheekbones.

Step 6: Use a bright pencil like the Nyx Cosmetics Slim Lip Pencil in Hot Red to fill in your lips a little bit inside the natural lip line, then apply a lip color of the same shade overtop. If you’re feeling a little extra daring or are going to a costume party and wish to make a point, add a tiny mole using a black eyeliner pencil.

How dare you accuse that movie of being less than perfect! That movie is inspiring. Not only did I buy a yellow belt with a rhinestone buckle because of it, but I’ve also been known to go into the local bakery and buy those pastries that are like whipped cream and strawberry sandwiches, and then jam them into my face like I have an infinite supply and it doesn’t matter how many I eat because I’m probably going to be executed soon anyway.

Okay for a moment I wanted whipped cream and strawberry sandwiches until I remembered that LAST NIGHT I BOUGHT ONE ON WAFFLES AND IT’S IN MY FRIDGE HOLY CRAP. At this point I might as well be executed because this kind of calorie is gonna kill me with happiness regardless.

Kirsten Dunst is an angel and I love this movie way more than I should. Beauty marks and blush for everyone!!!
