After liveblogging the 86th Academy Awards red carpet last night, we picked our favorite looks and the worst ones of the evening. Now, it’s time for a whole other ball game: beauty. Makeup and hair from the likes of Anne Hathaway, Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett, and Lupita Nyong’o positively killed it on the red carpet.
While one might imagine that the list of stars with the best beauty looks would have all the same names as the “best dressed” compilation, this year actually surprised me with how many poorly-dressed (relatively speaking, of course) folks had amazing hair and makeup, so there are plenty of unexpected people on this list, too.
Oh, Angelina. Radiant as ever in proper bronze shadow with a great natural lip shade and glowing skin.
Emma Watson invariably picks perfect makeup (or makeup artists) for red carpets.
Uh, yes, more Karen O and her haircut forever please.
Viola Davis. Two words: FINGER. WAVES. (Wait, is that actually one word? Regardless, her hair is amazing.)
Anne Hathaway’s makeup was spot-on in how it didn’t compete whatsoever with her dramatic dress, but I was primarily surprised about how much I dug her hair.
While J Law and Chrissy Teigen both sort of failed at the slicked-back business, I really dig how soft and face-framing Anne’s was. It looked touchable rather than gel-filled.
Again, not into Liza Minnelli‘s ridonkulous jumpsuit, but BLUE HAIR FOREVER, GIRL.
This hair and makeup looks amazing on Julia, bringing out her gorgeous hazel eyes and her trademark smile.
Jared Leto, because duh–that ombre ‘do.
The people who are regularly doing Lupita and Cate Blanchett’s makeup and hair need all the high fives. Her complexion is glowing, her makeup doesn’t compete with the incredible baby blue Prada gown she wore, and her brows look perfect.
And this Fred Leighton gold and diamond headband brought everything together so perfectly. A+.
I couldn’t stand those weird fleshy batwings, but this orangey-red lip color is so fun on Julie Delpy!
Sari Mercer looked gorgeous, which makes she and Chiwetel Ejiofor just entirely too hot together.
Like I said last night, Gabourey Sidibe did a great job with these gorgeous locks and perfectly smoky makeup.
Seriously, Cate Blanchett’s skin may be the actual Light of Galadriel. She’s just channelling Veronica Lake and the Sun here so hard.
Now, for the worst beauty looks…
