You Will Not Recognize Renee Zellweger In These New Photos

You will not recognize Bridget Jones in these new photos.

Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

In general, I try not to embrace plastic surgery rumors with open arms. This is not because I think they are somehow offensive; I would be lying if I said I hadn’t speculated at some point about various celebrities and their potential operations (that they’ve had, not ones they need, which I think would be a whole other ballpark). I just think they are often based on super subjective “evidence” that vary due to different lightings, settings and makeup. But when I saw the following photo labeled “Renee Zellweger” the other day, I was genuinely perplexed. Girl looks different.

This picture was taken at a charity event in San Francisco on Monday. I did not recognize the actress whatsoever. I still don’t. Did Getty mislabel a photo? I wondered, thinking that perhaps it was the angle fooling me, until I saw another photo and continued to not recognize her.

It’s not as though she doesn’t look lovely. She has consistently looked great for a long time, but I am so confused about how different she looks. Her eyes have a very different shape, as do her brow bones and lips.

Like I said, if she had plastic surgery, then whatever! That is fascinating. I wish I knew more people who had done so sometimes, so I can asked them about the stupid ear surgery I still want. In fact, we have all said there could be something we want. Even Michelle Obama approves! Numerous stars have had plastic surgery, but I think it’s always a little startling when it appears that a celebrity has completely altered their appearance.

Obviously, human beings age. We all do it, and therefore do not wind up looking like our 19-year-old selves forever because then we’d be preternaturally teenage creeps (although if I could go back to my freshman-in-college self and tell her to stop being so afraid of shorts and start wearing more effing sunscreen, that would likely be beneficial today). But even with stars, relatives and acquaintances whom I see photos of from five decades prior, I can still recognize them. I am just a little taken aback at how genuinely unconvinced I was of the caption “Renee Zellweger.” As my concise coworker Joanna said: “She looks like Hillary Clinton and Jennifer Lawrence had a baby.”

that first picture especially. OMG. like…is that renee?

  • Deena

She looks exactly the same, just older. OMG PEOPLE AGE!!!!!!

Like I said, I know people age. But also like I said, people decades older often look very similar to their younger selves. I still recognize photos of Judi Dench, Glenn Close, Oprah and Helen Mirren from when they were really young; I still don’t think she looks “exactly the same, just older.” Opinion!

That is noooot just older. She looks totally different. Also reading that comment confused the crap out of me because I am also Deena…It’s not me though!

I totally feel you! I used to just post as Elizabeth, but there were like six Disqus commenters who went by Elizabeth, and I never knew which one was me and it was terrifying.

She looks completely different and not older. Another Jennifer Grey has been created & perhaps ruined.

  • emilykwells2188

Yes, she looks great but like a different person. Wouldn’t have guessed that was her at all.

  • María José López

She looks like Juliette Lewis on that second pic.

  • CaseyDia22

I would NEVER have known that first picture was Renee Zellweger!

What’s odd is that I think she looks more natural in these pictures than she normally does on the Red Carpet. If she did have work done, they did a great job. On another note? I’ve had my ears pinned back and they didn’t botch it at all.

    • Samantha Escobar

HOORAY. Okay, because that is the only thing I am very seriously debating. Can I ask you a few questions?!

    • PaintingChef

Of course! You can email me at paintingchef(at)gmail(dot)com

I had this done as a teenager…it did wonders for my self-esteem, and while I do think they could have been done more perfectly, I totally don’t regret doing it.

  • Celia

Oh wow, I never would have recognized her! Her entire face is completely different.

  • cat butt

I think she looks beautiful. We see so much bad plastic surgery, this is a refreshing change IMO.

  • waffre

I don’t think she’s had anything done. It looks to me like she’s a little older and she stopped plucking her eyebrows. I think you guys are too used to seeing plastic surgery because those pictures are examples of what happens to people’s eyes when they opt NOT to get an eyelift at 45.

Have ya seen Renee Zellwegger before? ;) Her squinty eyes were a pretty major defining characteristic.

  • Alicia Huberman

It’s the angle. And the 2 photos are from different events. The first pic is from her first appearance in 5 years: http://www.marieclaire.co.uk/news/celebrity/545938/renee-zellweger-makes-first-red-carpet-appearance-in-five-months.html#index=1

5 months, not 5 years, according to your link–and in the second picture on that page, she looks perfectly recognizable. :)

Frankly, I don’t see the difference in the brow (they’re lighter and unshaped) or the lips (paler lipstick). Her eyes do seem to have less of an epicanthic fold; if she did have her lids lifted, I hope it wasn’t a result of the ‘squinty eye’ teasing. That comment always pisses me off.

  • Elizabeth Aspen

My guess is she got sick of all the “lemon-eyes” jokes. It’s sad what this industry drives women to do to themselves when they are perfectly beautiful to begin with.

Why are we comparing photos that are clearly taken at least 10 years apart. It’s like comparing a photos of Betty White taken when she was 30 and again at 90. Quit trying to make a story out of nothing.

I AM SO CONFUSED BY THESE PICTURES I DON’T UNDERSTAND

  • Marcelle Nassif

I would not have recognized her

  • lola

Renee had very heavy eyelids which is typical of the sami people. She had some of the fat removed from her eyelids. The problem is, she doesn’t look like herself anymore.
