Beyoncé Who? Solange Knowles Is A Goddess In Stunning New Photos For Harper’s Bazaar

Solange Knowles may still be most famous for being Beyoncé‘s little sister, but that’s due more to the extreme fame Beyoncé has achieved than any lack of success on Solange’s part. (It’s like how we still think of Jay-Z primarily as “Beyoncé’s husband,” even though he’s way successful in his own right.)

The younger Knowles is a critically acclaimed musician, and recently she’s made a name for herself as one of the best-dressed cultural figures around. If we could steal any celebrity’s closet, we’d put some serious thought towards making off with Knowles’, so we were thrilled to see she had a huge, candy-colored photoshoot in the current issue of Harper’s Bazaar.

“I’ve always had an annoying relationship with the term ‘tastemaker,’” she said. “But it’s been a defining part of my career for the past couple of years.”

From anyone else, that quote would be annoying as hell. But Solange owns it.

She also has a refreshing amount of perspective on her earlier work, including a pretty cheesy pop-R&B album she released at 16 that failed to make her a huge star.

“I still stand behind the stuff I did early on, but I was on a record label and I didn’t have a lot of creative control,” she said. “Another side of that is just being young and having bad taste. There was plenty of that too.”

She might have had a corny start, but her later work has been more than making up for it, and the photoshoot that accompanies her interview is astounding. Solange carries off mixed prints with a regal dignity in a $1500 Moschino jumpsuit that would make the rest of us would look like crazy people. She wears chic little mod dresses and country club flats against pop-art graffiti backgrounds.

“Never blend in,” reads the caption on a photo of Knowles in a multicolored Chanel cape dress. This should be framed and put on everyone’s walls. It’s much more applicable to our daily lives than, “Keep calm and carry on.”

Bleh. Forget calm. Be like Solange. Wear giant sunglasses, mix prints, and never blend in.
