On Wednesday, Marie Claire found itself in the middle of an angry Twitter tornado after it tweeted about Kendall Jenner‘s braids. In the tweet, it painted Kendall as practically inventing cornrows in the photo above:
The link in the tweet goes to a Marie Claire piece called “The Undercut Braid,” which is all about “a modern day spin on cornrows, the undercut braid trend has celebs and runways opting for a bolder take on braids.” It’s more than a little ironic that in the entire gallery of 11 photos, only two of the celebrities featured with cornrows were black women. And the idea that Kendall took “bold braids” to a “new epic level” is absurd, considering the 18-year-old white woman did not invent cornrows.
As a result of Marie Claire‘s assertion that she did, Twitter exploded with frustration, outrage, and hilarity, including the excellent hashtag #EpicBraidLevels. Here are some of the best responses we found–20 tweets that hold some pretty amazing commentary while often being totally hilarious.

On top of it being a ridiculous statement about a nobody, we really need to redefine the word “epic” here, http://t.co/TdcArxAOs2

To its credit, Marie Claire tweeted a response later, but Twitter is still shaking its head wondering when idiocy like this will stop cropping up all over the place.
We didn’t mean to offend or imply that cornrows were new. Our tweet was poorly worded.
