Someone needs to talk to Dr. Netflix about getting Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion (1997), Ghost World (2001) and Me Without You (2001) ready to stream, because there is a drought of movies to watch that portray female friendships in all their complexity. Despite the painful lack of interesting female characters in Hollywood, there are some movies out there that show women being friends with other women. Some of them are even on Netflix, so you don’t even have to curse Blockbuster for no longer being a thing.
Not all of the following movies are specifically about friendship, but they all portray friendships between women, which is more than most movies can say. Pro tip: watch these movies about friends with your friends!

Believe the hype. Every single person who watches this automatically falls in love with Greta Gerwig as she plays a realistically confused and messy twenty-something with a realistically confused and messy best friendship.
My best friend and I have watched this movie more times than I can count. It is one of the more vastly underrated comedies of all time. It’s a classic buddy comedy full of gross out humor and sex jokes galore. There’s even a musical number about penises. Cameron Diaz, Selma Blair and Christina Applegate are gems– hilarious and beautiful gems. If you haven’t seen this movie, it’s easy to digest and I suggest watching it with your BFFs.
A lot of people seem to hate this film, but I think they’re wrong and probably the kinds of people who need women to be portrayed as perfect angels in movies. Bachelorette was written by a woman, stars a bunch of awesome women (Rebel Wilson and Lizzy Caplan, anyone?) and portrays the complexities of female friendship all the while it makes you laugh out loud.
Tina Fey’s high school classic is finally available to stream! Though the movie mostly deals with bitchy antics and girl on girl hate, at the end of the day it’s a tale of friendship.
The friendship forged between a pregnant Christian teen and the school’s bad-ass Jewish outcast is one of the most beautiful aspects of this dark comedic gem from the mid-oughts.
I hope everyone on Earth agrees that Krysten Ritter is criminally underutilized in film and television. If not, this film might convince you. It’s not a classic and it never will be, but it’s a fun watch. Why do things have to be heavy all the time? They don’t.
Two words: teen assassins.
Dionne and Cher are an amazing pair of best friends. By the end of the film, you know they’re buddies for reasons other than knowing what it’s like to have people be jealous of them.
Am I completely bonkers for thinking this academy award winning film based on a killer memoir is a female friendship movie? Some friendships are morbid, some are unlikely! My fellow crazy friends and I bonded over it.
This one is the ultimate be all and end all of films about lady-friends. Thank you, Ridley Scott! Thank you, Geena Davis! Thank you, Susan Sarandon!
