50 Empowering Songs That Will Help Get You Through Your Horrible Breakup

Breakups are a very special and pointed type of pain that throws your insides to the ground, stops on them, and then lights them on fire for good measure. Basically, they suck. But the good news is that (A) it doesn’t last forever and (B) there are things you can do to feel better!

One of the best things you can do is to make a playlist that has primarily non-romantic songs–especially ones that will make you feel empowered enough to delete your ex’s number, throw away all your photo booth pictures, and focus on yourself. Some of the following 50 tracks are “I can get through this” type of songs, others have an “eff off” sentiment, and a few are just plain “I’m awesome and I know it.” And plenty of them are really nostalgic (I’m sure I had more than a few of these in my AIM profile in high school), so there’s a whole other layer of emotion.

  1. Gloria Gaynor – I Will Survive
  2. P!nk – So What
  3. Kelly Clarkson – Since U Been Gone
  4. Metric – Live It Out
  5. Ingrid Michaelson – Girls Chase Boys
  6. Beyonce – Ring The Alarm
  7. Breakage (Feat. Zarif) – Over
  8. Missy Higgins – Where I Stood
  9. Destiny’s Child – Say My Name
  10. Adele – Rolling In The Deep (Jamie XX Remix, Feat. Donald Glover)

Danke! And that is a very good idea. :D

ALSO RIHANNA. I should’ve added a song of hers. I think I just kept thinking about “Stay” which goes on the list of “Songs You Should Never Ever Listen To After Being Dumped,” so I forgot everything else.

I had no idea other people knew that song but it is amazing. It’s particularly good if you’re the one who left the relationship.

Oh gosh, I’m so sorry to hear that. It’s the worst. :( I hope everything gets better ASAP and that you have a Netflix account to wildly binge-watch stuff for the next few days. :)

Broke up with my boyfriend two months ago and this list would’ve been perfect! Definitely jammed out to “You Oughta Know.”

I adore Miss Moving On by Fifth Harmony, it’s catchy and empowering. I mean we all need to cry, but after a while you have to pick yourself back up and this song, for me, does just that!
