Former Nickelodeon star Ariana Grande, who was once famous for her bright scarlet hair and is now famous for being a miniature Mariah Carey, has made a shocking number of headlines for someone who’s never had a nude photo scandal or even a radio single that everybody can hum. She isn’t quite a household name yet (unless your household has a few teenagers in it), but she’s gotten our attention more than once. A few months ago, we were confused but fascinated when she wrote a wordy manifesto on her Instagram defending her right to wear hair extensions. Today, she’s back in the news for… taking them out.
Ariana appeared on last night’s American Idol (which apparently some people still watch?) with her natural hair on display, all straight and brown and controversial. I get that this is an interesting change– I’m captivated by celebrity haircuts and dye jobs to an embarrassing degree– but I didn’t realize it was such a big deal for someone to just, you know, not wear a ponytail. E! wrote a whole article about it, Hollywood Life wrote a whole article about the last time she wore her hair down, and People has a whole mess of feelings on her signature style. It’s her fans, though, who are really interested. ”I WILL LOVE YOU UNTIL THE LAST HAIR ON YOUR BODY FALLS OUT,” declares one fan on Twitter whose display name is, surprise, Ariana Grande. I can’t say I understand what the fuss is about, but she’s definitely talented/beautiful/cool, so I guess I can’t blame people for getting really pumped about her lack of bump-it.
Her hair does look gorgeous in the photos from her American Idol appearance, so if this is the start of a new chapter in the rich history of her famous hair, I’m along for the ride. I wonder what’s next!
