The Best Beauty Of The 2014 Met Gala Red Carpet Proved Taking A Risk Pays Off

Met Gala 2014 best beauty makeup hair looks Beyonce Taylor Swift Joan Smalls

Last night’s 2014 Met Gala saw so many incredible looks on the fashion front, making our “Best Dressed” list virtually impossible to condense. (It also made our “Worst Dressed” list all the more saddening given how wonderful and versatile the “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” theme was, but that’s a whole other story.) But in addition to showcasing some of the most gorgeous gowns we have seen all year, the Costume Institute Gala also held numerous beautiful makeup and hair styles that are worth checking out on their own.

While some of the best lipstick and eye makeup consisted of the “typical” type of red carpet beauty you would expect at the Met Gala, there were also a lot of fantastic risks that people took–ones that actually paid off to the max. If you’re searching for new spring/summer looks, this is the place to do it! These folks all were doing it right last night.

I will never not be obsessed with Nicole Richie‘s purple hair and how beautiful it looks when styled in any way, ever. If you have been debating going bright or pastel this summer, do. it. right now.

Since Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swift did their makeup together, we had a feeling the two would have great beauty looks. Karlie’s understated makeup, perfectly filled-in brows and simple jewelry made this a win.

Speaking of whom…Taylor Swift. I was obsessed with her gorgeous pale pink Oscar de la Renta gown, and while I think her red lip almost clashes with it, it wound up being a true and vivid enough red that it contrasted with the dress in a pretty way.

Beyonce‘s understated eye makeup plus this deep burgundy lip shade made for a stunning beauty look. And that veil? Oof, please tell me those are coming back in style right now.

Naturally, Dita von Teese killed it on the vintage beauty front. She barely looks real, and I mean that in the best possible way.

Even though I really didn’t like Emma Stone‘s crop top and skirt combo, I absolutely loved this braid.

Zoe Saldana looked unbelievable in Michael Kors last night, but her makeup was equally stunning. For those who want a simple, understated look that is polished enough for work but good to go out in, this should be your beauty idol.

Blake Lively‘s mermaid waves (which we recently told you how to do!) are absolutely stunning.

Seriously, I’m obsessed with it.

Even though her hair was a little peculiar and stiff, I loved Reese Witherspoon‘s bright pink lipstick. It felt like Legally Blonde all over again, which is actually rather fantastic.

The best thing about Lupita Nyong’o is that she (i.e. her makeup and hair artists) know exactly how to coordinate everything about her look. Rather than going for a bright green flapper dress plus a bright green eyeshadow plus a bright lip, they went for a natural lip, pretty purple jewel tone on her eyes, green and silver headband, and cute pinned-up hair.

Kristen Stewart looked so cool yesterday, and this hair really helped the overall look.

I also loved Selena Gomez‘s gorgeous, deep lip shade. It worked great with both her skin tone and her dress, which was so very wonderful.

Anybody who says Joan Smalls didn’t win the entire evening with the blue lipstick/stunning braid combo is wrong and you shouldn’t listen to anything they say ever again. Like I said last night, this is an example of taking a risk and having it pull off. She looks absolutely stunning in every single way.

Taylor Swift is so pretty but I’d love to see her do something totally different someday. Her perfectly-curled hair & red lip combination is getting a little stale.
